Thanks so much to Rooted in Thyme for the feature!!!
Hi Everyone!
Remember this pile of pallet wood I was supposed to make my son artwork from?
Well Mama got greedy - and decided to use it for herself ( don't worry Gordie - I promise I'll make you something - scout's honor - just not THIS week )
Well progress in the bedroom continues -
We have a very small master - very very small - so everything has to be stragically placed to optimize space.
I've always liked having a bench at the foot of the bed - but just couldn't make it work in this house - without walking around with black and blue legs from smashing into it constantly.
After walking by this pallet wood for a few days, an idea started forming in my head - what if we ( I use "we" very loosely in this case ) could make a custom piece - very narrow - but still a BENCH???
Suzan says - John, do you think you could make me a bench for the foot of the bed?
John says - No Suzan, I cannot, I'm not a carpenter
Suzan says - How hard can it be to do?
John says - Very hard - if you've never done it before,
Suzan says - Oh but it's nothing really - just a few planks of wood - and some more wood for legs - there's nothing to it really
John says - So you make one
Suzan says - I'VE PAINTED THE FLOOR - I'VE PAINTED OUT FURNITURE - CAN'T YOU JUST SAW UP A COUPLE OF PIECES OF WOOD?
John says - Listen to me carefully, I'M NOT A CARPENTER
Suzan says - But it doesn't TAKE a carpenter to make a little bitty bench -
Suzan says - AND it doesn't have to be functional - it's not to actually sit on
John says - Well what the hell is the point then? Just to look at ?
Suzan says - Yes - just to look at, it would make my heart so happy just to have a little bench to LOOK at.
That night John started working on one -
Look what he made!!!
Keep in mind he has never built anything before - EVER.
It's rustic - and shabby - and perfectly imperfect - and fits exactly how I thought it would.
Oh oh, there's some space beneath the bench - can't have any of that!
( remember, small room, have to utilize every square inch )
Does anyone remember this? ( if not you can find it HERE )
It was an old wooden crate that I picked up for 5.00 last summer - I painted it white and stencilled it AND
it fits under the bench like it was meant to be there - and gives me more storage
I love that I have somewhere to place a few books
I dry brushed it white - with a little blue here and there - and for 5 dollars I have a bench and storage!
Suzan says - Do you think you could build me a little bookshelf
John says - Relax. I think you're overestimating my abilities here.
John says - And whatever you do - DON'T SIT ON THAT BENCH.................
John says - I TOLD you, I'm not a carpenter
Suzan says - Oh but John, I beg to differ.......................
Oh yes, you're a carpenter
( and I am his lady)
At this rate maybe I'll get him to build us a house....................
I mean how hard can it be to do?

That turned out awesome, Yay John great work on the bench - you must have some awesome powers of persuasion in your house LOL
ReplyDeleteIf I had a hammer, I'd hammer in the morning...
ReplyDeleteNever mind me, I'm up earlier than usual. ;)
The bench looks great and I love that he did it for you. You've got a good man there, I do believe. :)
Wonderful bench and it looks fantastic at the foot of the bed! Now if you gathered up enough pallets you could start another little business..."Have a Seat"....
ReplyDelete(Tell John he doesn't have to thank me for putting another idea in your head!!) :)
Now that's true love, what a love. The bench and trunk under it look really nice. x
ReplyDeleteand you married him anyway...and had his baby.
ReplyDeleteReally, this is lovely! Way to go John!
Wow-He has just redeemed himself in my eyes (mostly)...lol So, the question goes----Would you marry him anyway...would you have his baby.....(age not being a barrier, that is). Have a great day- I am off and running here- xo Diana

I just sent you an email with the details.
Thank you!
That man loves you, Suzan, hang onto him!! :-) But does he realize now that he's shown what a great job he can do, all the projects you'll think of????? It was a very dangerous first project.
ReplyDeleteAnd I LOVE the look - totally!
Love the whole ensemble.
ReplyDeleteDoes John have any unattached brothers? On this continent?
Your little pink hearts drink showed up on the previous website I was on 5 seconds before your site popped up. Fun. I knew you were on the way at that point.

DeleteHave a great day - hugs,
Suzan
John...... you did excellent. However if you would of known what was good for 'ya, you would not have done so well. She will be asking you to be a carpenter all the time now, whether or not she's being a lady!
ReplyDeleteBliss
YAY John! Great bench and I just know more things are on the way!!!
ReplyDeleteWow oh wow, I love it!! I had to Pin it. Do you think you can talk John into doing a tutorial? I would love to try to make one myself!! Hugs, Diane....P.S., now I have that song stuck in my head! ha
ReplyDeleteHe laughed his head off when I asked him - said he needed a tutorial himself on what he did LOL
DeleteThanks so much Diane!
Why why why that dang song! Over and over ad nauseam (sp)...
ReplyDeleteYes tell John we want a tutorial on that bench ;-)
So cute and shabby! And I adore those little wooden hearts too!
ReplyDeleteJohn, John...what have you done???
ReplyDeleteYou will never have peace in your life again.
Suzan, how big is that list you've made already?
Great job by both of you- I love that sweet moment at the end of the bed.
Run, John, run!
xo, T.
So pretty... and very sweet. :)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! He did a great job!
ReplyDeleteI have a narrow one at the end of my master bed and I move in and out. Right now it is in his "workshop" . He used it to brace something and sawed off part of it. LOL
Thanks so much - I'm loving it!
DeleteToo funny about your husband sawing part of your bench off - I won't let John use this one for sure lol
XOX
Darling darling bench! You did a sweet job painting it and your husband is much handier than he thought! I enjoyed your post! Thanks for sharing and thank you for the sweet comments you leave me! I enjoy each and every one!
ReplyDeleteBest Wishes and Blessings,
Amanda
I love how John always says no, but always ends up doing what you want. You trained him well. I'm taking notes in case I meet a John of my own.
ReplyDeleteThe bench looks lovely. Can't wait to see the whole room!
He did an awesome job!
ReplyDeleteI love it.
Tam
Thanks so much Tammy!!!
DeleteXOX
HeeHee! That bench looks worthy of being sat on - what does he think he is anyway? All men are born with carpenter skills arent' they??
ReplyDeleteI want to know - have you sat on that adorable bench? Love the crate underneath. As usual the finish is perfectly imperfect. John and Suzan -Benches For The Stars!
ReplyDeleteOMG! That is a very sweet bench. Tell John, he's da man! You wouldn't believe what I would have got ( but I know from past experience it wouldn't be half as sweet ). Patty/BC
ReplyDeleteThanks so much!!!
DeleteCan't sit on it - and he tells me he absolutely cannot give a tutorial on it because it's filled with mistakes lol - but it's too cute, right?
XOX
Love it!!! Kudos to John for making it!!
ReplyDeleteThanks Heather - he's getting such a kick out of all these comments LOL
DeleteXOX
Will John be taking orders? Just sayin! Boy I wish I could get my non-carpenter hubby to build me something...anything! Wow, he did a great job, I LOVE it! I'm gonna go buy my own tools... how hard could it be? hahahhahehehe...I wouldn't have any fingers left!!!
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Pendra
What a handy guy, and never let him forget that as he has just set precedence for new projects! Looks great!
ReplyDeleteHi Suzan!!!!
ReplyDeleteI love it!!!!! It fits perfectly. I love the case under it and the books. Great idea!!
And John made it!!! He has more talent hidden, I just know it. He just doesn't want it all to come out. LOL

Now he is a keeper...charming bench my friend.
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Linda
LOVE your very charming bench. Perfect! Great job!!
ReplyDeletemary Alice
You married a carpenter and you didn't even know it, sista!!! lolol! You tell John we all think he did a fabulous job for being a rookie. hehehe! It looks absolutely adorable at the end of your bed in its perfect rusticness. Yep....bench now. Bookshelf later. House in the works..... lol
ReplyDeletexoxo laurie
I love reading about you and John. Sometimes you offer the only relief from the humdrum in a given day.
ReplyDeleteI love the bench and see that John knew just what you wanted, but have a question: Did both of you sit on the bench and one of you end up sprawled on the floor...I ask because i see the legs in the first pictures appear straight up and down, but in later shots they are at an angle. Or am I seeing it all wrong?
I think this might be a good topic of discussion, as many years ago my husband had to change the angle of the legs on a garden bench after one of us stood up unexpectedly and the bench dumped the one who remained seated. I leave you to figure out who hit the ground in a hurry...LOL
This is hilarious - what an EYE Marje - LOL - for some reason he did the back legs on an angle and couldn't match them to the front legs - HE"S NOT A CARPENTER lmho
ReplyDeleteSo I turned it around - because I like the angles!!!
And thanks so much for your sweet words,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Much love,
Suzan
I get a kick out of your conversations! John may not be a carpenter, but he sure can build some serious eye candy! Love the bench.
ReplyDeletehugs,
Deborah
the first of many...:) now he probably wishes he had done a BAD job on the bench
ReplyDeleteI love the creativity! That little heart is the perfect touch too. Gotta love a guy that builds for you!!
ReplyDeleteComo me gustan estos trabajos!!
ReplyDeleteGracias por enseñarnoslo.
♥♥♥
awesome pictures! I love the little heart detail :)
ReplyDeleteHugs
For a man who's not a carpenter, he did a wonderfully shabby, chic job! Wow, tell John he built a perfect piece of decor! Who wants a functional bench? It got me thinking...my husband is pretty handy (he builds pallets and crates for a couple companies)...thanks for the inspiration, Suzan!!
ReplyDeleteOh, are you telling John about all the compliments he's getting?? He must be proud, he should be proud. (or is his head getting too big? lol)
Debbie :)
awww love the bench HE IS A CARPENTER lol
ReplyDeleteSo....is your heart happy now? I sure hope so. What a guy to go and do your bidding. And oh, go on...sit on it. It looks perfectly sturdy. :) The color mix you did on it is so cool. Love that the crate fit so well too.
ReplyDeletethey both look great.tell john i need one for my house i think but he will need to bring it to australia-love dee x
ReplyDeleteIt's a beautiful bench, and I love the - what was it? - that you put underneath. Most of all, I love the dialog that you post, it so reminds of me and my own dear Mr. Don. He's no longer with us, but I remember so many similar conversations I had with him, and they make me smile. A "master" bedroom should be filled with love, and it sure seems like yours is. That's the most precious thing one can have.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Jan!!! It was just a little sort of tool box when I bought the box.
DeleteI'm so sorry to hear about Mr. Don Jan, really really sorry!
XOX
Hi Suzan, thank you so much. I had no idea you live in Montreal. What a small world! Mr. Don lived in Montreal, too. We travelled back and forth, a long-distance relationship, for 13 plus years. The plan was to marry once I retired (4 years and 10 months from now the current countdown)and we would live 6 months in Canada and 6 months here in Wisconsin, but unfotunately things did not work out as we had planned for so long. We sure did have some funny conversations about our future wedding, though. I wanted to get married in a flashy no-holds barred Vegas ceremony, and he wanted to get married in my backyard (say what?) with friends and family all around. I said "that is ridiculous. I will be 66 years old when we get married and you want me to act like I'm a blushing bride surrounded by my doddering old brothers and sisters?" And he said "yes." I don't get this "follower" stuff but I'll see if I can figure it out. In the meantime, I've added you to my bookmarks/favorites and will visit you now all the time and bug the heck out of you probably.
DeleteSo cute & beautiful. I'm your new follower from Blog Hop.

I love the bench and the little box underneath looks so cute there. I can relate to the small bedroom, we have a step stool at the end of the bed for Maggie to get up on the bed. And sometimes at night i forget about it and trip over it and end up falling into the closet lol. I pray for a bedroom bigger than a closet in the next house. How wonderful that John made that for you, it is such a sweet thing to do and it is very cute. good work John
ReplyDeletehugs Tobey
My classroom is right next door to the woodshop class. I need to cut the wood for a variety of projects before I retire. I don't need another bench, but it would be fun to try making one.
ReplyDeleteHe did a great job! It looks plenty functional to me! ;)
ReplyDeleteEven if it was functional ( and I'm not sure about that ) you'd get splinters in your but LMHO!!!
DeleteThankss o much!
Hugs,
Suzan
This turned out fantastic!! It is just perfect! What else can't he build??? :)
