Well well well - it feels a little strange not to have a give away today lol !!!
You're stuck with me and my transformations sadly ............
Some people obsess over pillows - some over lamps - I have an obsession with mirrors - which is ironic because I can't stand to look at myself in one of them - but I LOVE them all over the house -
I'm too embarassed to tell you how many of them grace our walls - but it's a dark rowhouse and mirrors reflect light ( that's my story and I'm sticking to it )
And the upside of redoing furniture - mostly dressers - is that I have an abundance of mirrors since most dressers are easier to sell without one attached.
This is a great technique to use when you get to the bottom of your tin of Annie Sloan chalk paint - and I mean the bottom of the tin - a real scraping the barrel kind of situation like this
I add a little water ( very little - maybe a teaspoon ) and stir like crazy and this makes the perfect white wash!!!
You won't believe how much white wash you can create with this little trick
Enough to do this mirror ( which is huge - although it doesn't look it here )
There's no special technique when white washing other then going in the same direction - following the grain
It's a great option to use on dark wood especially - because it turns the white into a light grey very time worn color...................
I call this my Grey Gardens look lol
Doesn't it give a perfect patina? This mirror came with 2 side panels - love the arches on them
Here's a close up of the finish
At this point you can take a wet rag and wipe it down until it looks like this ( these are the cabinet doors on my kitchen hutch - also white washed over dark wood )
But I want to keep this mirror a little lighter - like BEACHY light
Fall is here - everyone's decorating with oranges and reds - and Suzan's going to show you how to create a beach look LMHO - I'm in full fledge denial folks - FULL FLEDGE
here they are set up on the wine cabinet - I had to layer them because the cabinet is not wide enough
Not bad for an empty tin of paint !!!
And the winner of Tuula's beautiful Wind Chimes is
KRIS - from JUNK CHIC COTTAGE!!!

ReplyDeleteHi, Suzan
ReplyDeleteThe mirror looks beautiful. I love white washing. Have a great week
Vanessa
Dang! I really wanted those chimes!
ReplyDeleteI love your beach look with white washing! A great idea!
ReplyDeleteThis is a great technique. What a great transformation of that mirror. It looked so outdated and boring before.
ReplyDeleteCongrats to Kris, wonderful gift.
ReplyDeleteLoving the mirrors, I, a fat lady, also love mirrors. They are all over the house, all sizes and shapes.
I may try the white wash. I don't use ASCP but I think it would work on latex as well. Love the three sections of this mirror, so unique.
Have a blessed day, Ginger
congrats to the lucky winner!!!!1 You work magic with your projects , you truly do!I like the white washed look,
ReplyDeleteI even put mirrors on any flat surfaces in the house. Love a white-washed finish - especially on a mirror. People do not want the mirrors who buy your pieces? That's crazy. Instead of beachy, maybe winter white. A toast to Kris with one of Tuula's goblets!
ReplyDeleteI have several mirrors in our house as well and not just in the bedrooms or bathrooms. I have 3 in the living area and they are all antiques which I love. They have character. One is an old wood picture frame converted with mirror, one has a dull gold frame and one is painted white. It's chippy and I've never touched it. I like how you paint your frames so they are grey looking. They look beautiful! Thanks for the tip!
ReplyDeleteLove the white wash tip! And I see that beautiful chandelier in the mirror. I love that thing!
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry. Did you say WINE cabinet? Where's the wine? I'm all about the wine. I mean, the mirror is gorgeous too, but WHERE'S THE WINE?????
ReplyDelete-andi
Your mirrors look fabulous! Such an easy and effective way to update that dated wood. Congrats to Kris!! I'll send out the wind chime as soon as I have her info.
ReplyDeleteI can't stand wasting the paint, either! Great way to use it up and it makes a gorgeous wash! Love those mirrored doors...give them to me. ;)
ReplyDeleteCongrats to Kris! I'm green with envy!
Love white. I think I need to suck it up and start buying ascp. I do everything the long, hard way. Um and YOU should be lookin in every mirror you pass by pretty lady!
ReplyDeleteI like that finish a lot, even more than a solid but distressed white.
ReplyDeleteLOVE it Suzan and I never feel that I am stuck with you and your projects. You know I look forward to them. Unfortunately, you are living in denial, FALL is coming my dear!
ReplyDeleteCynthia
I love the beachy light look! Very nice project! And congrats to the lucky winner! Sweet hugs!

I also love mirrors. One can never have too many mirrors. I also do not like the mirrors and the dressers together and separate them. Thanks for the idea for white washing. Blessings
ReplyDeleteYou're so welcome Nancy - and thanks for your kind words !!!
DeleteHugs,
Suzan

Love it, Suzan. I like to scrape the bottom of the can, too, for all it is worth. I love working with washes, too.
ReplyDeleteThat darned Kris won another give-away? I am gonna have to rub her head for luck, I think- xo Diana
That's a great trick for getting a great finish! I do the same thing!!
ReplyDeleteFantastic finish Suzan!!!!! love it!
ReplyDeleteVery pretty! I'm the same way about mirrors, hate to look in them, but have them all over my house. I too love reflected light!
ReplyDeleteI admire your bravery and expert use of paint (while my pile of dark wood re-do's is adding up!) Wish I could be a fly on the wall while you are working to see it come together....but then you might paint me ;-)
ReplyDeleteGreat idea for salvaging the last bit of paint! Those mirrors are lovely and even more so with the white wash! Have a beautiful evening!
ReplyDeleteBlessings, Vicky

ReplyDeleteYou are too smart! It's perfectly beachy white-washed! I have a lot of mirrors, too! :)
ReplyDeleteso smart and so beautiful, everything looks so fresh and pretty, love the mirrors too..Phyllis
ReplyDeleteI'm not much of a furniture painter, but I am finding pieces here and there and trying to get the nerve to dip that paint brush. I had no idea this is how you did a white wash. If you aren't down to the bottom of the can...what are to ratios of water to paint? I just love these mirrors, I never would have thought they'd turn gray! Love it! :)
ReplyDeleteXO,
Jane
Good stuff! Talk about getting your money out of it! I really love the greyish color.
ReplyDeleteLooks terrific Suzan. I would have never thought of that - thanks for the tip. I also love mirrors but do't have that many.
ReplyDeleteHave a great week.
Mary
It looks just great Suzan! I love that look!
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad someone else is in denial.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, I want that chandelier in your house. BEAUTIFUL. I never would have thought to make use out of the last bit of paint I have...but now I will. The white washing technique turned out great. I love mirrors too!
ReplyDeleteHmmmm....I guess I will need to find something to whitewash around here. I have paint drippings everywhere....what do you say? Just add water and stir and then paint?
ReplyDeleteCongratulations, Kris!! And Suzan, you better get on the darn bandwagon! Fall is fabulous! Get you some pumpkins already! Although, I did appreciate learning this whitewash technique. It is a beachy look, indeed.
ReplyDeleteXOXO,
Meredith
Congrats Kris lucky lady, oh I really want to do a makeover you make it look too easy! Although I'm not silly enough to think it is easy
ReplyDeleteWell that's a tip I can use! I have mirrors...lots of them. I keep buying them and then storing them under my beds! Yours look lovely and I'm inspired!
