Vanity is thy name ( or determination, whichever applies )

No words necessary ?

Well actually - yes - there are some words that are necessary ( you wouldn't expect one of my posts not to have far too many words, would you? )
As in :" I love this more than words can express "

John says - We won't get that upstairs
Suzan says - Of course we will -  we we just have to remove the mirror.............

Until that proved to be impossible -

John says - I guess it's been glued down to the bottom piece -
Suzan says - Why on earth would they do that?
Suzan says - Let's keep trying

All screws were removed and it wouldn't budge - not an inch -
We've tapped it with a mallet - then with a board and hammer - as my heart sank lower and lower.

John says - I'M TELLING YOU, SOME IDIOT HAS GLUED IT DOWN - you'll destroy all the veneer trying to pull it off

I've worked on furniture long enough to imagine this could be true - very strange things were done back in the day ( as opposed to the very strange things that we do today )
But still - something told me he was wrong about this

John says - Just sell it
Suzan says - I can't
John says - What do you mean " you can't "  of course you can
John says - Do your magic on it - and sell it
Suzan says - It's not the kind of magic it needs
Suzan says - It needs to magically come undone so that it can go upstairs
Johns ays - Well it's not going to go upstairs

Which makes me even more determined.
I mean if he'd just sympathize with me - be as broken hearted as I am - then maybe ( but just maybe ) I could let it go.
But to make me get rid of it without even a drop of remorse?
I think people have gotten divorced for less.

I could just hear the divorce lawyer now in fact

Judge - What exactly are the grounds for divorce M'am
Suzan - My vanity, your honor.
John - Her vanity, your honor

And then I'd show  it to him - and he'd grant us one immediately - not understanding how anybody could refuse me such a beautiful item.

I'm a little embarrassed to admit this but I felt all 7 deadly sins at once at the thought of it leaving my clutches

Suzan says - I've been wanting a piece like this all my life
John says - Oh come off it - you say that about every piece you do
Suzan says - I DO NOT !!!
John says - I've heard that sentence before Suzan - plenty of times
Suzan says - You're as cold as ice, you know that?
I mean it but he just laughs out loud..................

He went out a little later and I decided to attack this piece on my own -
And lo and behold I see these 2 strange things on the back

Never saw this before - and I've worked on a LOT of furntiure - had no idea even what to do with it - so I kind of hooked the flat head screwdriver into those gaps and twisted it a bit and OMG OMG OMG it started to turn and release 2 two screws that were holding it firmly in place.
The mirror is off -
The vanity can be moved upstairs.
And once again we've dodged a bullet with the divorce courts !!!

When he came back home he walked right by it - and me - in fact - sitting on the stairs looking like the Cheshire Cat

Suzan says - Well?  Can you help me carry the vanity upstairs?
John ( doing a double take ) says - How the hell did you manage that?
Suzan says - It's called " Determination " John  -  you know, that gene that Men seem to be sorely lacking unless it comes to golf ?

Want to see it one more time?

It'll be a little while before I can work on it ( although it's been primed ) because I picked up a couple of other items that I'll show you another time :)

Oh and I've been singing this song since yesterday - a little louder when John happens to walk by me but he doesn't get the connection at all lol..................
You're as cold as ice
You're willing to sacrifice our love
You never take advice
Someday you'll pay the price
I know.................

HE IS A " FOREIGNER " AFTER ALL  ( although he has claimed - he really has - that Brits are NEVER foreigner's - no matter where they live )

But his thinking is completely foreign to me..............just saying.

Have a wonderful day everyone

Much love,
Me

  1. Ooh! Susan! As soon as you showed those I knew exactly what they were!!!
I have ran across those little buggers myself! But!there's always that but! My piece didn't have a mirror attached. It didn't have anything attached! It was a piece of a piece of a vanity.
But I also have a desk that has a locking mechanism similar to that. So I was just lucky to know that little latch.
However, WOW!! Yes! I agree! You really are the True Lucky Woman! Because you have the vanity!!
    Beautiful! Beautiful! Beautiful piece!
I may be becoming a foreigner...I am turning green.
Am I now a foreigner or an alien? I can never remember which. Oh well. Either way, I am becoming green with envy. Can't wait to see what else you've come up with! I always look forward to your posts! Always!!

    1. I've never seen them before - I was so curious about them that I was going to take a photo and ask anyone if they knew what I should do with them - YOU could have helped me LOL !
Thanks SO much Jackie ! I've already primed the piece but painting it will take a while I think because it's way back on the list of priorities - then I'm going to take it over to Hometalk - where everyone can bash me for days because I painted an antique !!!
      Have a great one!

  4. My jaw dropped and all I could say was Wow. What a fabulous score. That is one amazing vanity. They don't come along everyday. Glad you got to keep it. Poor John doesn't stand a chance with your determination. Now I'm going to be singing Cold As Ice all day. Rock On from Vancouver Island.

I'm always looking for something like this - and it was such a deal - really won the lottery with this one !

  5. Susan- That is almost identical to the piece my mother had (she called it a dressing table). I gave it to my brother years ago and now wish I had kept it for one of my granddaughters someday. The trim is identical and although I can't see the top of your piece..my mother's had a piece of matching wood trim that was at the very top of the mirror. I can't wait to see yours painted up. She had a matching "stool" too that sat in front of the opening.
    GREAT find!!!! xo Diana

  7. Yay Suzan!!! Determination is the perfect word. ;) I don't know how many times my husband has said "Forget it. It's not going to happen/work". And I say "Oh, it's happening!!!" And it always does. Eventually. ;)

  8. It's a gorgeous piece. Even if it had to double as a coffee table/hat tree, I wouldn't get rid of it! I'm glad it worked out, but as for John...show him what you've got as you always do!

  11. Never under estimate the power and determination of a woman. I would've have done exactly the same thing as soon as the door closed behind him. If there's a will there's a way. Yeah, lucky you get to keep this beaut! Looking forward to seeing the After pics.

    1. I thought at one point that I had damaged it completely and was sick to my stomach.
I think I could have loved it enough to set it free - rather than destroy it - but OMG I can't tell you how thrilled I am that it's upstairs Marie LOL

  13. I think John may have been right about 'Brits are NEVER foreigner's - no matter where they live' maybe back in the day, like when the sun never set on the British Empire, but he may not have noticed that it is not the case anymore. LOL (Just giving beloved John a hard time!) ANYWAY, I've got to hand it to you Suzan and your determination. And you are right that men don't seem to have that same determination (when it comes to getting a piece of furniture moved from A to B, anyway). Good for you. I am so proud of you, and can't wait to see what Suzan hath wrought when this is finished!

I'll reply with the song "Youuuuuu arrrreee sooooo beautiful to meeeeeee. Youuuuuu arrrreee sooooo beautiful to meeeeeee. You're everything I've hoped for.... everything I neeeeeeed. Youuuuuu arrrreee sooooo beautiful to meeeeeee. " Yes, I'd be singing to that vanity. Sweet mother of furniture... she's ah-mazing.
Now, as for removing the mirror... well... let's just let that be a secret between you and your blog readers. lol

  17. Oh, you lucky, lucky gal to own such a gorgeous vanity.
If only I lived closer, I would have helped move it...........right to my house. :} It found a good home for sure. Great find Susan.

  19. If that vanity had been in a bedroom on second floor before, it surely must have come apart to get it both upstairs and down again.
I rather think that my british cousins would give up sooner, rather than later, while I, now all-American, would worry that piece to death!!! while figuring out how to solve the riddle.

Please be nice to John. He is a man and British and sensitive. The guy can't help his childhood training and his cultural biases. We love him and wish him happiness---which happiness is you…….being the sweetheart we know you are……..as well as being an all round superior furniture painter and household decor specialist…….I look forward to seeing what you do with the vanity……..ta-ta for now…..

  22. Suzan,
I have a vanity very much like that.....it was my mom's from the 1930's. I love it but never did anything to it because I'm not sure what to do with it. I can't wait to see what you do with yours.

  25. I don't know why men lack the determination to figure things out. Well, unless it's something THEY want to figure out. LOL! I am glad you figured it out because that piece is just gorgeous! I can't wait to see the makeover.

  26. I believe John's thinking being completely foreign to you has nothing to do with his being British and everything to do with his being a MAN... I'm wondering if he could file for divorce because you're in love with Vanity... That wouldn't be fair, though, would it?

  27. Why do our other halves make so much fuss about something that will take such less time if they just DID it :-) I love this vanity unit mainly because my Grandma used to have one exactly the same. Looking forward to seeing the finished project!!
