I'm done
or IT'S done
And this just may be the year of Black for me or charcoal - I think I may be done with whites for awhile !
I'm loving the Restoration Hardware look of this piece :)
( I see a red door and I want to paint it black )
Am I aging myself again?
I originally bought this to make as a built in for the dining room - but we're not ready to tackle that room yet so decided to keep it in the 3 season porch for the rest of the winter.
However - I once again had a change of heart
Suzan says - I'm thinking this piece would be perfect for the den
John says - WHAT?
John says - We already installed a mantel that you had to have in there
Suzan says - So what? That can easily be uninstalled !
John says - Where the hell are you going to put that one?
Suzan says - Maybe in the dining room when we finish it !
Suzan says - AND I'm not even sure if I want it there - I just want to see it there first
John says - And if you don't like it - we have to drag it back out and reinstall the other one?
Suzan says - Something like that, yeah
John says - IT'S AN INSANE ASYLUM - I'M TELLING YOU I COULD HAVE YOU COMMITTED
John says - I'm NOT moving things around just to see if it works - who the hell does that ?
John says - You always say I have no vision - what's happened to yours all of sudden?
John says - This thing weighs a ton
John says - Yadda Yadda Yad.............................
I actually waited till he went out - and started the process on my own -
I disassembled the mantel
and brought the beast in on my own
after taking off the back piece - removing the doors - and taking the fireplace insert out so that I could actually move it ( inch by painful inch )
and guess what?
It's staying !
( thank God - because I really didn't want to take it back out and drag the mantel back in - this painting heavy furniture business is exhausting I tell ya ! )
But it fits the room perfectly - especially against the plank wall
It has a pull out shelf which is such a bonus - the room is so tiny that I'm sure this will be used !
( it still needs another coat of paint on that shelf - I wasn't going to show you but what the .................. )
I painted the interior with chalkboard paint - and stencilled a design on it with a chalk pen
It's what this room needed - though I didn't know it until I actually saw it in there
John says - It looks like a rain forest in here
John says - Why in God's name are there tree limbs on the wall?
Suzan says - I was going to hang the Picasso but I couldn't find it anywhere
Suzan says - IF YOU WANT TO SIT IN HERE AND WATCH HOCKEY GAMES - YOU HAVE TO GIVE ME AT LEAST ONE COMPLIMENT ON THIS THING !!!!!!!!!!!
John says - I'm going to look for a monkey to hang off one of them.
Suzan says - Could you get me a sock monkey? I LOVE them
Have a wonderful Tuesday everyone !
Much love

What a great piece!!! I love that finish and have an armoire I painted that way, and have somehow resisted painting it lighter! It looks great and against the plank wall!!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Anita !
DeleteI'm so happy I went dark with this particular one - because of the fireplace I think it would have looked " off " lighter !
XOXOXO
Your finished piece is absolutely beautiful! Looks perfect in that spot and I'm loving the black, too!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness! It is gorgeous in black! And it looks fabulous in your room. Love it, Suzan! Yeah, when our guys don't cooperate with our vision, new just wait until they go somewhere and tackle it ourselves. ;) I'd say it paid off huge!
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Cecilia
Thanks SO much Cecilia ! Thank God it worked out - because the thought of taking it all apart to move it again was completely overwhelming lol !
Deletexxx
It's a great piece, Suzan, after you've worked your magic. You & John together - hilarious. You sound like me - when he leaves, I start the action by myself, just so I don't have to listen to the flack.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Rita lol - too much flack, Jack !
DeleteXOX
honestly I had my reservations about painting it black but now I'm a convert, I absolutely love it, I have an old china cabinet and I think black is what I will chose, I just love this look, its a winner,
ReplyDeleteHoly smokes that looks fantastic!! Great job!!!
ReplyDeleteLove it!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks SO much Mo !!!
DeleteXOX
Divine! And hauling that furniture around is what keeps you so fit & trim.
ReplyDeleteIt turned out beautiful! I love the black, what a gorgeous piece!
ReplyDeleteTania
First I love the whole idea of the cabinet/ fireplace. The color is great as well. I can't believe you moved it by yourself.
ReplyDeleteMy husband is the same. If I asked him to do something he huffs and puffs . It will get done in his own time.. I go ahead and do it. He usually doesn't realize it for awhile. The cabinet you would know. Men!
wow. Suzy you're amazing. Your talent and your patience keep your home evolving into something truly unique and beautiful.
ReplyDeleteJohn's obviously never visited the rain forest. I have. It doesn't look like your living room. ;-)
ReplyDeleteAND, although I love the piece of furniture, it will take a while for me to adjust to the darker color.
Since I spend several months each year in The Netherlands, I follow several Dutch blogs. I have noticed the trend towards grey in many of the homes pictured on those blogs. Any chance you are "trending" that way, too? I love your latest grey piece. Linda@Wetcreek Blog
ReplyDeleteLooks beautiful Suzan. It fits the room perfectly. Have a great week.
ReplyDeleteKris
Your fireplace unit turned out SO great, and I like where you have placed it, too (though I can't believe you moved it by yourself!!) I love how you styled the top. I wish I had this piece for my own living room! :)
ReplyDeleteYou are a smile in my day, Suzan.... :-)
ReplyDeleteI LOVE it! It really does look like something from Restoration Hardware! I can't believe you moved this thing by yourself...but I can totally relate to the "adrenaline" boost we get when we want something done, and now! Have a great day :) xoxo
ReplyDeleteThanks SO much Beth !
DeleteThat ' anger " adrenaline is incredible - I agree lol
You have a great day too!
XOXOXO
LOVE IT!!! It looks great in the library/TV room. The Picasso?? LOL You make me smile. A lot. xx Pam
ReplyDeleteomg.. I love every single minute of it!!! LOVE the black!!!
ReplyDeletefrom one Suzanne to another.. you are a crazy genius!!
ReplyDeleteThanks SO much Suzanne ( don't know about the genius part LMHO !!! )
DeleteYour SuzANNE - I'm Susan with a Z :)
Have a great one !
xoxo
It looks gorgeous! Great job! You and John crack me up, too.
ReplyDeleteOMG your cabinet looks fantabulous!!! You have great vision and are lucky to find such wonderful things on Craigs List. I'm longing for a faux fireplace...might just have to follow your tutorial myself as my hubby is not too handy. Thanks for all your inspiration.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much June ! I think this was a one of a kind piece, I've never seen one like it - but you can find all kinds of faux fireplaces on CL - or make one yourself -
DeleteWe just did one last month http://suzyq-vintagous.blogspot.ca/2014/12/diy-faux-fireplace.html ( at least you can get the " look " of one ) !!!
xxx
Hi Suzan!!!
ReplyDeleteCALLING THE DOUGLAS...YES, I HAVE ONE NEW PATIENT..............
It's funny, I was like, NO don't rip out the mantel because I loved it so much, but, WOW!!! This piece looks so gorgeous in it's place and I love the color!!! You did it again, you made me go WOW!!!
I really love the idea of the branches!!! I wonder if it's a female thing, like using rocks, dead leaves and other mother nature items, where guys think they belong outside. Hmmm.....
Have a great week!!!
Pam
xox
I love how it looks in dark! The fireplace actually shows more now. Good job! I'm sure John agrees, deep inside.
ReplyDeleteThe Picasso a Rembrandt or maybe a Van Gogh or maybe you can find your Leonardo Da Vinci to hang there. :} :}
ReplyDeleteYour furniture fireplace unit looks great up against your plank wall. Pure Genius for sure.
Susan, remember those furniture sliders I was telling your about? They make moving heavy pieces of furniture so much easier.
It certainly was worth waiting for,it is beautiful and i am sure John will like it,maybe. Thanks again for your wit i needed it,you are so sweet, have a great day.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Marlene !
DeleteJohn DOES like it - but hates the branches LOL !!!
xoxo
That doesn't even look like the same piece... amazing again!
ReplyDeleteGoal, home run, touchdown, basket allrolled up in one.
ReplyDeleteHe shoots !
DeleteHe scores !
lol - this is so appropriate because the Montreal Canadiens just won a game tonight LOL!
Thanks so much Pam !
xoxo
WOW.. I just love this piece!! Looks great!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous Suzan! Have a great week, Cecilia
ReplyDeleteThis is just stunning....very jealous of you right now!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Gilly !!!
DeleteXOXO
That piece looks really amazing! All those fabulous details just pop now.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous and yes perfect, right there! Thanks for linking up!
ReplyDeleteSo wonderful. You are too funny that you did it yourself. I would have done the same thing.I can't wait to see the dining room progress. I really enjoyed your guest post over at Anne's. Your old house was amazing.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely an amazing makeover! I predict that this one is a top pinned, blogged, read post for 2015. You did a beautiful job. Patty
ReplyDeleteJust call me a grinch, but I really don't get it. This is a faux fireplace? With a sliding thingamajig for writing letters or serving tea? And china/book/whatever at the top?(Actually, in the picture it looks like mirrors).
ReplyDeleteThe whole thing seems so odd! Not matter that it's painted beautifully and fits in the room. I think I might go mad as a hatter sitting in a room with that piece. It seems so illogical. Or do I need some help understanding the whole matter? I have a buck stove that holds a real fire. With a chimney. With crackle and glow. With real matches and kindling (I'll take that kindling on your wall, just have john pack it up and send it COD…LOO!) And the heat is warmer than that from any furnace. And I can dry my wet shoes and towels and hair with the heat.
Where's the logic? Oh, wait, at least you don't have to clean up ash and such………..
Listen up Grinch - it's an electric fire place with storage LOL !!!!!!!!
DeleteI'm peeing my pants here that you'd go mad as a hatter sitting in the same room with it - you're too funny.
When you visit we can sit in the living room in front of the gas fire, k? LOL !!!
What on earth is a buck stove? Have to go google that now - but if it has real fire I'm jealous - ( I really miss our wood burning fireplace from our last house )
There's so many laws now here in Montreal - if you have a wood burning fireplace you can keep it - but once it's been converted to gas you can't go back ( pollution ) so I have to live with this illogical fireplace LOL !!!

xoxoxo
It is absolutely awesome...you did an outstanding job on this magnificent piece. I would kill for one like this. :)
ReplyDeleteI love it. And I totally get its usefulness. And since it's electric that pull out shelf makes sense. But I keep going back to the original pictures and I don't see the arched details as original to the piece. Did you add it? And the color looks great against the wood on the wall. And since hubby didn't help with moving it send him to the "sin bin". See us Ducks beat his team...

Thanks so much Barbara !!!
DeleteI think it's just the way the photo was taken that we don't see the details in the seller's photo - that part was such a nice surprise actually !
How does Anaheim end up being top in all divisions - that's a hard pill for even me to swallow LMHO !!!
XOXOXO
That piece is awesome in that room!
ReplyDeleteAs always, Suzan, you magicked that plain piece into something absolutely gorgeous! You have a vision for pieces that I wish I possessed!
ReplyDeleteGreat job Suzy! The black looks great and the accent grate is just the perfect finishing touch!
ReplyDeleteJP
Well done! You would never know until you tried to move it, and if you didn't try it, you would always wonder if it looked better in the other room! Poo Poo, John!
ReplyDeleteSuzan...I just love this piece!! Yes...it does look like a Restoration Hardware piece of furniture. I love to look at their catalogs and looking in their store too.
ReplyDelete~Cindy
Wow, what a gorgeous piece! It's so much better now that it has a fresh coat of yummy paint. Now that song is stuck in my head.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing at Vintage Inspiration Party.
Really did turn out gorgeous Suzan and yes, it looks right at home! Thanks for sharing it with SYC.
ReplyDeletehugs,
Jann
That, my friend, is a perfect example of GIRL POWER!! Good for you for not giving up and hauling the thing in!! We women are determined, aren't we?? :) I want to know what John said when he saw that she'd hauled it in there by herself LOL!! I think it looks fabulous!! ~Zuni
ReplyDeleteSuzan, it is absolutely gorgeous!! You did an amazing job.
ReplyDeleteThanks so MUCH Victoria !!!
Deletexox
It's fantastic. John is wrong on this one.
ReplyDeleteIt is gorgeous Suzan! GORGEOUS!
ReplyDeleteOMG, it looks wonderful there. I'm sure the Picasso will look fab as soon as you find where you misplaced it. I've gotta go paint something black!
ReplyDeleteWhat an absolutely stunning piece...can not believe what it looked like before!
ReplyDeleteDeb
@Seeking Lavender Lane
Thanks SO much Deb !!!
Deletexoxo
Suzan... I love it! And it looks fabulous against the plank wall.
ReplyDeleteI have to say it hardly looks like the same piece. Enjoy that little pull-out table too. I think you'll have lots of fun with that feature.
Thanks for linking up at Project Inspire{d}!!
It's looking oh so lovely in it's new coat of black paint - I love the transformation!
ReplyDeleteThis is phenomenal! Love that you painted the wonderfully unique piece black AND the way you decorated it including the "tree limbs"! You made this post incredibly "real" by including the conversations with your hubby - don't we ALL have "talks" like that!! How brave of you to carry the piece by yourself - that'd be the time, I'd either wreck it or myself!
ReplyDeleteOmg you know we were supposed to buy white paint for our mantle this weekend but got busy but I'm loving your charcoal. Jules sitting next to me loves it too I'm just not sure if it will go with everything else I have in there can I send you a picture and tell me what it says to you?
ReplyDeleteSuzan, sounds like the same conversations we have here - and that's just to move a chair. These guys are definitely stuck in their ruts. I love the new fireplace piece - so unique and the black is perfect against your plank wall. As always just gorgeous! Cathy
ReplyDeleteWOW Suzan....what an awesome before & after!! Gorgeous!
