I was lamenting to someone last week about the sorry state of today's television ( this seems to be something I'm doing far too frequently - hope I'm not going to become one of the cantankerous old ladies - banging her cane on the ground and mumbling about the good old days lol )
But I'm 53 - and so I can still remember when t.v. was good - when t.v. was exceptional really - and that's what makes todays t.v. so hard to digest I suppose.
Care to take a walk down memory lane with me? Ok - it's a long walk - but if you're over 50, I promise you it's a walk worth taking - c'mon take my hand - let's drift back in time....................
I picked the 60's - so probably watched most of these between 7 and 10 years old - but I remember them all perfectly ( well I suppose reruns helped my memory a lot )
Laying on the living room floor with my brother ( no converters back then - that's what the kids were for )
with pliers on the knob of the t.v. because for some reason that was always the first thing that broke - kind of like the starter switch on todays bar b q's - and we often had to get up and adjust the rabbit ears ( sometimes that was a cleverly bended wire clothes hanger lol )

Count them - 36 shows - and I'm sure I've missed at least that many as well,
Now can you understand my grief over today's shows?
3 Networks brought us all of this by the way - shows that the entire family watchrd together
on the ONE t.v. set in the house.
With 1 commercial at the start of the show - 1 halfway through - and 1 at the end
I don't even know how many stations I have, there's that many - and I can name on one
hand ( barely ) how many shows I actually like..................
Oh and by the way?
The 70's were just as good!

Time to sign off
I remember watching lots of these shows as reruns in the 70's!
ReplyDeleteI can remember laying in front of the TV with newspaper spread out on the floor and my dad would pop some popcorn (in a pan!) and we'd eat popcorn, drink koolaid and watch those great shows!! What a trip! Yep, today's TV is really crappy for the most part. I wish they'd put ALL of the reality shows on one channel so that I could block that one from our cable box!
ReplyDeleteNow there's a thought Jaye - actually I wish all the networks would just run all of their old shows again!
DeleteHugs,
Suzan
I'm 27, and I've watched and loved a lot of these shows! I agree- much better than anything you can find today!
ReplyDeleteI watched all of these shows. And the first moon landing. and on Saturday mornings the really old shows, like Laurel and Hardy, the Bowery Boys, and the Three Stooges. All of us kids together, watching on a small black and white TV. You forgot Courtship of Eddie's Father!
ReplyDeleteI thought Courtship of Eddie's Father was the 70's for some reason, Paula?
DeleteRemember Brigitte loves Bernie - oh wow this list could just go on forever lol
Hugs,
Suzan
Oh how I miss the Carol Burnett Show!!! and Johnny Carson...
ReplyDeleteHave a great Sunday!
I grew up with most of these shows on reruns or TVLand in later years. Love them!! In fact, we don't watch TV in our home, but we have let our daughters watch these shows off of the internet and they LOVE them, too!! Funny to hear some of the conversations with their friends as they talk about these old shows!! :)
ReplyDeleteThat was a great walk through TV memory lane. I'm a year younger than you and watched most of these shows. I remember I had to go to bed on Sunday night while Ed Sullivan was on, but my dad would come and get me out of bed (with my mum telling him not to) to see Topo Gigio or chimpanzees on roller skates! Great memories, thanks, those were the good old days.
ReplyDeleteI'm in my 50's and when I was about 10, I actually met Brian Keith from Family Affair up in a fire tower of all places. I thought at the time it was the coolest thing that had ever happened to me!! Thanks for the memories!
ReplyDeleteI Love Lucy, Shirley Temple on Saturday mornings, Lawrence Welk, The Mickey Mouse Show (or is that from the 50's?), Roy Rogers (who I met when I was 16!), The Monkees, Here Come The Brides (with Bobby Sherman...my first concert! lol), Gentle Ben...
ReplyDeleteWhat a great post Suzan!! Memories...
Debbie :)
Oh yeah ! I'm 52, so we were watching many of the same shows, Suzan. Loved Hogan's Heroes and Disney on Sundays ! I'm with Debbie (above) having forgotten about Shirley Temple and Here Come the Brides. LOVED those shows ! Ahhh, the good ol' days. It's nice that we can relive them on cable. The Big Valley is on now and The Virginian will be coming on soon. We were big fans of the westerns, including High Chaparral (although that might have been '70s), Bonanza, The Rifleman, and the wonderful Clint Eastwood as Rowdy Yates. I do like many of the shows on now, but the rest of cable is crap. Anybody up for some Honey Boo Boo ??? tee hee!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the walk down memory lane Suz, I am 54 so I remember all of these shows so well. I named my oldest son Jarod, because I loved the name so much from watching Big Valley. I remember staying up in my jammies to watch Ed Sullivan every Sunday night. Today the networks have been taken over by reality shows and sitcoms seem to be a thing of the past, and that makes me so sad. My kids grew up watching reruns of all of these shows and now my grandchildren will only have memories of stupid reality shows. The other night the movie Wizard of Oz was on and I watched it and sang along with all the songs, hubby was on the laptop and kept looking at me like I was a weirdo lol. But like that show I can probably sing most of the songs from all of the sitcoms, green acres is the place to be farm living is the life for me lol These are such happy childhood memories, thanks so much for taking me back. good good memories hugs Tobey
ReplyDeleteYour memories are my memories, too.; ) I had such huge crushes on the older brother on Flipper, Bill Bixby on My Favorite Martian, Robin on Batman, and the Professor on Gilligan's Island.♥
ReplyDeleteIt wasn't just that tv was so much better in those days; it was that families actually spent time *together* watching them. In the same room. Without distracting electronic devices. ::bangs cane on floor::
Another one of my favorites was The Addams Family.: )
Thank you for bringing back such happy memories for me.
xoxo
That brought back a lot of memories. And today's TV is disgraceful, it's too bad the children today don't have the really good shows we had. My favorite shows, or at least a couple of them, were Family Affair and Mission Impossible.

This transports me back to sitting with my family and loving those shows. You are so right about it being something we shared, commenting on, laughing and crying together over the plots that we knew would have a happing ending. It was the kind of entertainment that took us away from the hard things in life not something that shoved those things in our face. Did I just bang my cane? ~ Maureen
ReplyDeleteDanger danger Will Robinson. Is it wrong I can still sing all the songs and that I watched every single one of those except I was/am not a trekke?
ReplyDelete~Bliss~
Thank you for the trip down TV Memory Lane, and boy are these some good ones! I Like watching these on the ME tv channel, when I can.
ReplyDeleteJoAnn
What a fun post, Suzan! lol! I remember ALL of those shows and having that pliers in hand to change stations! lolol! Toooo funny! How alike so many families were back then right down to sitting down together, popping corn in a pan, using pliers to switch stations, and the sweet, simple innocence of those shows. Now, so many shows are all about sex, drugs, and violence. Ahhhhh....for the good ol' times, huh....?

Hi Suzan: You forgot my favorite "Little House on the Prarie". Would watch as a family every Monday night. I think I loved it more than the kids. After Michael Landon died I couldn't watch anything about him anymore. That was just the saddest thing for me and still is to this day..Happy Sunday..Judy
ReplyDeleteThose were all great shows. I loved Carol Burnette, and Bewitched was my favourite. I think I channel Mrs. Kravitz sometimes. I loved them all. You're Canadian right? Remember the Pig and Whistle? Haha! And Don Messer's Jubilee? OMG. Thank you for the trip down memory lane. Love your blog.
ReplyDeleteWhich one did Anne Murray get her start on - was it Don Messer's? The Pig and Whistle - it's time gentlemen please - it's time to drink up your beer LOL - and I didn't mention " the littlest Hobo " Canadian as well!!!
DeleteThanks so much for coming by Tracy!
Hugs,
Suzan
I give the same speech to my kids. The ONLY show which we watched as a family about a year ago was MONK. We bought all 8 seasons and watched them back to back for a month solid! Then, the neighbours and their kids started watching it, cause our kids were bragging about what a good show it was. You're right Suzan, they just dont make those shows any more! Sad.
ReplyDeletebrought back some good memories - especially the PLIARS to change the channel!!!! i thought we were the only ones to do that!!! how funny!!! i remember watching so many of these shows with my grandparents - spending hours with them was so much fun. nowadays kids don't spend time with their grandparents the way we used to. and i had to laugh how you wrote "red skeleton" -- it's skelton & that was my maiden name! thanks for the memories, friend!
