I live in a pretty incredible area - in Montreal, It's an historical neighbourhood loaded with tons and tons of charm - and 20th century architecture, just steps away from the city center, it's also a pretty expensive neighbourhood ( in which I live in servants quarters basically compared to what I'm surrounded by )
Because there are days I don't have furniture makeovers to show you - I've chosen Wednesdays to showcase and feature one or two homes that are for sale around here.................( or apartment - or duplex - or teepee )Keep in mind this is in the heart of the city - so the prices reflect that - think Manhattan - where these places would cost 3 or 4 times what they're listed for here!
On occasion I'll showcase beautiful homes in other areas - countries - continents - the one thing most of them will have have in common will be their age - because I love old homes with stories to tell, join me won't you?

Canada and Australia, Shared History
Though a world apart, Canada and Australia have much in common. As countries they share not only an important heritage through the British connection, but also strong historical links including the many personalities and events that have shaped them.
One of the oldest connections is Captain James Cook, whose navigational experience in the Gulf of St Lawrence on Canada’s east coast led not only to his survey of Australia’s east coast, in 1770, but also the Pacific Coast of Canada in 1778.
Transportation of Canadian Convicts 1840
One of the most interesting historical links that led ultimately to the establishment of responsible government in both countries was the ill-fated Rebellions of 1837-1838 and the transportation of two groups of Canadian convicts.
The rebels, one group from Upper Canada (English speaking) and the others from Lower Canada (French speaking) agitated for representative government against the domination of the unelected British Legislative Councils. Both rebellions were quashed and many of the participants transported to Australia as convicts. Ninety-two followers of William Lyon Mackenzie, in Upper Canada, were sent to the harsh penal colony in Van Diemen’s Land (now Tasmania).

Why couldn't one of my ancestors have spoken up to the government?
If they had - I may have been waking up to this tomorrow morning............
I wonder why they didn't keep the criminals in Canada - where the winters are
as tough a punishment as any on the planet -
why did they get to go to paradise?
"Send these traitors to a place where there's warm tropical breezes and turquoise oceans............
And the rest of you can get to enjoy this for half the year"
Geniuses - all of them................
And before I leave you - this one just came on the market -
For bids in excess of 830,000 .................

I'm too tired to upload all the photos - so if you're interested you can click HERE
Besides - I have a lot of family research to do - and if I find out that anyone in my bloodline so much as stole a penny.................
I'm going to demand they send me ( and my family ) retroactively to Australia to serve out the sentences they most definitely should have ( I'm very honorable that way )
Have a great Hump Day All!!!
oh and one more little bit of trivia - Australia just ranked # 1 for the happiest place on earth.............

I love the first one. Actually I was trying to figure out why the second one is double the price of the first one? Couldn't really see it. The first one has a lot more class in my mind. :) Of course 2+ million worth. :)
ReplyDeleteFunny thing is, I have no desire to go to Australia. Now, New Zealand....yes. Can you find me a cheap house there?
I love the second one! Locate me by the beach and I'm a happy camper. Australia is one of my favourite places. I'd love to visit it at some point. That snowy photo makes me shudder knowing that winter will be returning again...and again...and again...
ReplyDeleteGood luck with getting the government to exile you to Australia, all expenses paid. lol Interesting history, Suzan, and yeah, what a punishment. I bet they don't get snowstorms in May! The first house is gorgeous, and although I wouldn't live there, I'd love to have an all-expenses-paid visit for a couple weeks and treat it like a holiday cottage. The second one is too white. The Victoria one looks perfect! And why did you put that nasty snow photo in just when I was almost forgetting that the same month that's brought out the daffodils and lilacs and apple blossoms also brought us 18" of the nasty stuff just a few weeks ago!
ReplyDeleteHi Suzan, WOW gorgeous properties! Love the second home by the beach. My best friend's son moved to Australia last year after college and she will visit soon. Lucky girl!! Of course he doesn't live in a house like any of these!! If so, she would probably not come back. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteHappy Wednesday. Hugs!!
Those are really amazing, but I don't think I could live there just because of the spiders. I knew a woman from Australia who told stories of tarantulas dropping down on them in their sleep. shudder
ReplyDeleteStacy
I confess! I will require exiling right along with you.
ReplyDeleteCrap. Now I feel like I need a vacation.
Exiled? Why not? Amazing places! I love the ocean views...those are the best part of the homes to me. I'd say the Palm Beach property needs a pool cleaning service. LOL...It is a constant job down there- Hope you have a great day-now I gotta figure out what to wear today and get going!;>) xo Diana
ReplyDeleteYes! Why did they get shipped off to paradise?
ReplyDeleteBeautiful homes, Suze.
Spiders dropping from the ceiling? No thanks! I've already endured scorpions dropping onto my face. I'll pass!
A little to modern for me personally but still beautiful. Spectacular views.
ReplyDeleteCynthia
Great spaces down under! With views like that I could live in a hut! What a punishment for the crimes! Not!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh.... I wanna live there is such a good title for this series. Yes, please. Thank you. :)
ReplyDeleteHey Stranger!!!!
ReplyDeleteYes, I am alive. Been in a cave for awhile, but, I'm out now:)!!!!
Love the third home. It's more my style, but, I do love the beach near the first house!!!!
Isn't it amazing that Australia was a penal colony!! I'm with you...Let's see if we are related to a bad boy/girl and get "Down" there!!

Well, all I can do is dream:) one day...in heaven:)
ReplyDeletegirlfriend, based on our conversation last night, "great minds do think alike"!! i was just thinking yesterday, "why couldn't i have been one of those 'poor people' who was born on a tropical island like jamaica or the virgin islands?!" nope! i've gotta make my own "tropical dreamland" here in texas!! but, our texas weather IS much nicer than your 26 feet of snow 9 months of the year!!!!!! have a terrific painting day -- i'll be thinkin' 'bout ya as i'm lounging in my virgin island paradise!!!! (paint somethin' red for me!!!)
ReplyDeleteI love the history you included in that post. Too bad your ancestors weren't rebels, heh? I love all the white and the stunning view in the second house, but to be honest I can't picture myself living in any of them.
ReplyDeleteWhat a stunning home. They really have made the most of the views with the huge windows and that window splashback. I would love to cook in that kitchen! We build some stunning homes here in oz :)
ReplyDeleteQuite frankly you missed a surgery 4 bedder with 2 baths study a couple of living areas and 5 kids, otherwise known as Mellywoods Mansion. But in all seriousness my mother in law has a beachside property with the most amazing views ocean from every window. Tissue good to be fom bad stock, lol
