Well I did it - I fought myself over this one for 2 months - I really did - and had it been a beautiful stone fireplace I would never have touched it - but it was U.G.L.Y - seriously - the center is concaved the rocks are in awful shape - and it was time for an update.
so again - if you missed yesterday's post - here's what it looked like
and here's what it looks like today....................I'm especially pleased that the " rocks " don't stand out like tons of separate rocks - it looks much more cohesive now
It went from Darth Vadar ( I was afraid to be in the room alone with it ) to Snow White - with a few swipes of a brush :)
The hardest part of all was painting the bottom edging against the freshly stained floors - I was a nervous wreck to be honest with you - but not one drop landed on the floor
I'll eventually build a boxed hearth - because this is so off balanced I can't really lay anything on it.
For now I have photos of my 2 favorite cities - New York and Paris - resting on it
and the flowers John brought home ( you can read about that fiasco HERE )
What do you think ?
Are you horrified that I painted it ?
Or do you think it's an improvement ?
Just so you all know - John loves it - so there'll be no John says - Suzan says for this post lol
You can see yesterday's post HERE to see the brick fireplace I painted in my last home - and some
gorgeous stone fireplaces too :)
Just on a side note - there's a huge cat that just ran by my window - ( it's 2 in the morning )
I'm hoping he's not a stray - poor thing - it's so cold out there - but wow - he's HUGE -
I'm wondering if he's eating all the mice that got the boot from this place when we bought it?
Have a great first day of the week all :)

I love it. We have a brick wall in our entryway (the back of our fireplace) that I have been hankering to paint. It's the orange/red brick from the 70s… I'm sick of it, but was like you kind of panicky to do it. Who knows…that may just be one of my projects today…after I get these grays touched up on the top of my head! Ha!
ReplyDeleteBe brave! Gray on the head and orange on the fireplace are so OUT! Let us know with before and afters if you get brave.
DeleteNice job Suzan! I think it looks 100 times better!! I'll be interested in seeing your mantel too!
ReplyDeleteIt looks so much better!! I would have painted it too, if I couldn't have knocked it off the wall without bringing the house down! A definite improvement :)
ReplyDeleteOoo! Huge, and I mean it! huge improvement! Yay! I feel your pain on the mantel...ours is ever so slightly off center...drives me nuts. I'm going to get Bruce to build a box over it some day and add a surround...he won't let me paint the brick and I haven't reached the point where I'll do it. Good call on yours; it needed it!
ReplyDeleteHugs
Cecilia
Love the white!!! It looks so clean and fresh!! My favorite though is the...........sticks on the mantle.....:))))))))) Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteSo much better! You were right to do it. Everything is really turning out beautiful.
ReplyDeleteOh wow, what a difference! It looks waaaaay better, you were taking too long to make it pretty ;)
ReplyDeleteSometimes you have to do what you have to do! And you did the RIGHT thing! Gorgeous! I look forward to each and every pic of your finished projects. I know the list for renovations seems to grows larger instead of getting smaller, but just keep going one small or large project at a time. Not everyone has the ability to transform a house like you do! You are very talented!
ReplyDeleteI love it but, I love painted brick fireplaces. I painted the one in our last house and everyone really loved it... Can't wait to see the mantel... Cathy
ReplyDeleteI KNEW it would look great!!
ReplyDeleteI love it! It unified it and it goes with the overall plan for the rest of the house! I love your idea of a thicker mantel! Great job! And what a job with all those crevices and textures!
ReplyDeleteIt looks fantastic! What a huge difference. I agree that the mantel can be beefed up with some crown moulding or some trim work. Awesome job Suzan! (So glad John likes it too.)
ReplyDeleteIt looks so fresh now... love it! Have a nice week Suzan! V
ReplyDelete100x better :)
ReplyDeleteIt now looks like a sculpture Suzan! Beautiful show piece! When on earth do you rest?! :)
ReplyDeleteMuch better!
ReplyDeleteYou KNOW I have never questioned your vision.
ReplyDeleteFrom the original listing photos I thought that pirate head gig was a permanent fixture on the chimney.
Three cheers!! It looks great!♥♫
ReplyDeleteSuzan, This was UGLY and looks so much better now.
ReplyDeleteYup. I love it. But that mantle needs help. The rock call for a nice substantial slab of something. It will tell you what it wants.
ReplyDeleteWhat an improvement! The other one just stuck out like a sore thumb. Great job as always!
ReplyDeleteI think it looks so much better now that you have painted it!
ReplyDeleteAmazing transformation. Just perfect! Those stones do blend in. It is official now it is yours. Love the fireplace!
ReplyDeleteI liked it better before, but I like rustic. It's your house to do with as you please, but if you or anyone else decides to go back to the natural looks that's probably going to take sandblasting...which it probably needed anyway.
ReplyDeleteReally? It was pretty bad lol - sandblasting it would have rendered it rock dust I'm sure........it was paint or remove it completely.:)
DeleteHi Suzan!!!
ReplyDeleteAWESOME!!!!
You just can't even compare the two...Well, I guess you did...OB1
Painting the fireplace made the room. It now fits into the decor and I love the medal garden decoration!! What a perfect piece to have in front of the concave!!! And John likes it!!! I knew he would...How could he not?
Well my dear, have a smooth great week!!! Your new place is going to look amazing!!!
Pam
xox
Definitely an improvement! The base looks very uneven indeed, but at least, the fireplace loks a lot more "you" know!
ReplyDeleteLove it!! Looks a lot better now...more "you". :)
ReplyDeletexo
Pat
I knew it would work! Now aren't you feeling better?
ReplyDelete:)
I like the painted rocks; but the metal "thingy" just detracts from the simplicity of the whole thing. Don't like that.
ReplyDeleteThanks - ( the metal " thingy " is staying though - for now at least lol )
DeleteXOXO
Much improved, IMO.
ReplyDeleteIf you must live with it, you must make it more friendly…… well done.
Thanks so much Marje !!!
DeleteXOXO
Definitely an improvement...so much brighter and it actually looks cleaner, too!
ReplyDeleteDebbie :)
Better. Looks much cleaner. I love beautiful stone fireplace, but your fireplace just had too many things wrong with it.....discolored stones, an angled stuccoed(?) chimney, mdf mantle and stuccoed sides of the stone. As I said-Better painted white becauses it disguises the imperfections until somewhere way down the road you can redo to your beautiful taste
ReplyDeleteYeah - it'll have to do for now - the whole wall is stuccoed - would love to change that our for drywall - and can I tell you how much I dislike that angled chimney - it makes decorating it very limited lol
DeleteThe white paint is just smoke & mirrors really!
Thanks Pamela !!!

GREAT job- GREAT! It looks SO much better...brighter and it blends in now and is charming rather than obtrusive. Nice all, Suzan! xo Diana
ReplyDeleteMajor improvement! I love it and the decor you used to dress it up as well....:)
ReplyDeleteHugs, Vicky
A gazillion times better and what the heck was that artwork the previous guys had???I love the metal scroll work and I think trim would be lovely.
ReplyDeleteMUCH better! I painted my Mom's 1970's brick fireplace in her kitchen with AS Pure White and it's so much better now!
ReplyDeleteYou were so right to paint it! It was truly awful and I love how it turned out!! Good call.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Jenna- easier on the eyes now anyway lol
Deletexoxo
It looks amazing Suzan! Maybe I should just go ahead and do it, jump head first into a can of white paint! I can't get over how white paint turns ugly into pretty. Not feeling good today. I've had a sore throat for 3 days now... waaaaaaa!
ReplyDeleteI can understand why you agonized over this project Suzan. I love natural stone and would have felt the same way, but you made the right decision. Having the mantle off kilter would drive me bonkers too, probably even more than the ugly stone. In any case, it's a huge improvement and once again shows the power of paint in action.
ReplyDeletelove love love its new version definitely improvement
ReplyDeleteIt's always daunting painting something that is natural and hard to bring back to its original state- but I totally think you made the right decision. It looks fab!!
ReplyDeleteThanks Rachelle - if I couldn't have lived with it - we would have had to change it completely - it was in pretty rough shape - xox
DeleteMe likey! You styled it really well too :) I'm all for paint covering a multitude of sins....
ReplyDeleteI love it painted white!!
ReplyDeleteAWESOME! It looks Great. Good Job! Love it.
ReplyDeleteKris
SO much better! Love the little round scroll work, and how you've layered NY and Paris. Awesome job! Glad John likes it!
ReplyDeleteThat was sooo clever. I love the result. It turned out just beautiful, Suzan.
ReplyDeleteHugs
Love the white! I noticed too that you cut the little squares of mantle on the side to a more reasonable length...MUCH better!! I think you're right to put a more substantial mantel and a boxed hearth, maybe of marble? Maybe able to get a nice piece at Restore! I love the metal scroll...what a lovely way to disguise the imperfections! You are just so smart! xoxox L.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely a great big high five on the do-over, I love it! I'm headed over now to read about the flowers. :)
ReplyDeleteSuzan I think your fireplace looks so much better painted white - suits the style direction you're heading with your renos. I'm sharing the love from the Show Me What Ya Got party!
ReplyDelete~Marie@The Interior Frugalista
Suzan this came out great. Much better. Love that piece of iron work that you hung. Things are really coming along.
ReplyDeleteCynthia
Gorgeous!!!! Phil freaks out when I want to paint ANYTHING and stone or brick would be no exception. Glad John likes it. ;)

looks definitely better in white. Isn't it nice (for a change) that Jhon's agrees with you on this one? lol
ReplyDeleteBravo! I love the new look too. I'm thinking of painting a brick floor. Scandalous!
ReplyDeleteI love the new look......takes it from campfire quality to uptown decor! Great Job!
ReplyDeleteIt's perfect now!! Cheers.
ReplyDeleteIt's beautiful...so clean and fresh!
ReplyDeleteI think you did a great job with painting your fireplace white. It really does look much more cohesive! I have not seen the picture of your whole living room, but I imagine it makes the space brighter and a lot more open. I am a big fan of minimalistic design and I always find that monochromatic colour schemes add to the catalogue-like look of any home! I recently read an article on
ReplyDeletefireplace design trends exploring the possibilities and utilization of wood and gas-burning fireplaces, as well as electric ones, but I still feel that the traditional brick fireplace with crackling fire makes the coziest home! Had Santa made it down your chimney and seen this new white fireplace, he would have been impressed!
Incredible Idea, Really interesting
ReplyDeleteEveryone would like to decorate their places as such so that it can grab attention form everyone. Among the popular items which are being used as for interior decoration purpose is fireplaces.Keep up the wonderful piece of work.
Suzan, your painted fireplace looks great! Thanks for sharing at Throwback Thursday.
