There's no point getting mad at me for saying this - because I only live there in fantasy - but I'd paint all that wood - WHITE !!!  ( the door would be painted black ) I'm ducking as I type because I know a lot of you are probably outraged by that statement !

The work and craftmanship that went into turn of the century homes just amazes me - when did it become ok to just build boxes I wonder?  The 50's?  The 60's ?
Because as much as we can try to recreate architectural beauty - it's still only mdf or plastic we're installing



Wallpaper gone - window treatments gone - bright - white and airy - this would be unbelievably gorgeous !

I'd personally have to remove all the wall paper too - but I'm just amazed at all the original details in this home

    Houses went tract at the end of WWII when millions of veterans came home from the war and millions of women had money from doing so-called "men's" work during WWII. The quality has not returned to housing for the average family unless one has a LOT of money to spend, and even then you WILL get MDF (which does not rot and there is a lot to be said for its use in certain applications) and Fiberglass (ditto) and concrete siding (ditto). There are still craftsmen out there, they just cost a lot to hire. As for painting the woodwork white, I see people painting irreplaceable original stained woodwork all the time and it makes me sick to my stomach. I mean, what's the point of having a house with original period details and craftsmanship if one is just going to throw white paint on everything and make it look like every other currently trendy and boring mcmansion. Once the patina is painted over, it can NEVER be restored.

    The box houses began after WW2 to house all the refugees and war bride marriages. Mass production means less character.

    What a gorgeous example of beautiful architecture this is!

    Holy smokes! Well, all the wallpaper and floral patterns make me want to curl up and rock in a corner, but the woodwork is amazing! I have to say I don't love the kitchen. It's not very charming...seems kinda blah and doesn't really fit with the rest of the house. (And by charming, I DON'T mean it needed gaudy floral wallpaper.) But wow...love that style home.

    This home is a complete jewel. My hat is off to whomever maintains that multi-colored paint work on the exterior. The whole house is all so carefully preserved - I hope the new buyers are respectful of that. These photos are a gift. Thanks, Suzan.

    What a truly AMAZING house! I loved seeing all the original woodwork throughout. The first "old" house we did was a Colonial Revival that had woodwork like that. The rooms were painted dark colors when we bought it and I painted all the rooms light colors so it wouldn't be so dark and foreboding.
    That would certainly make a fantastic B&B but I bet zoning laws prohibit that. xo Diana

    Why, oh why, must my tastes far outweigh my bank account?? This house is perfect for me! I'll have to let it go, though, because the location is NOT. I'm a Southern belle; I could't abide the New Jersey winters... Ah, well.

    Love it, very beautiful but seems strange that they updated some spaces and not all of it. Sure wouldn't want to clean it. And I just could not paint that wood.....the beautiful wood fireplace details....

    I'm not outraged... that's your thing, so cool. Me ~ I wouldn't touch a thing! The only thing I didn't like was the kitchen ~ too newish looking. I'd bring in more into the period of the house with decorative touches, while keeping the appliances.

    even my 13 year old daughter yelled "she'd paint it white??? is she crazy???" lol
    I don't think I would change one iota of this house, except my wardrobe. Because I would need long dresses with bustles, and elbow length gloves, to feel like I fit in. :0)

    I agree why don't they make them like that anymore? I use to love to go through old houses they always had secret hiding places,not anymore.If it's yours you can paint it. Thanks for the tour.

    Shoot...I'd have it painted bright white before I ever moved in. It is such a beauty...so large and so elegant...just like rich people used to live. If one has to ask how much the utilities and taxes are, they can't afford this house. It sure is a honey.

    I'm thinking Meet Me in St. Loius, parasols, long gloves, horses and carriages. And hot and cold running maids. Loads of paper to strip off, 2 rooms was enough for me thanks. Beautiful home with great potential, love all the fireplaces. xo Patty

    Funny...years ago I would have given my eyeteeth for a Victorian. Now...not so much as I have evolved to the Shabby Chic meets French genre. The wall paper and window frou frou is making me break out in a rash but...I think with all of that gonzo the house would lighten up substantially. The kitchen is way more my cup of tea...but looks so very out of place considering the rest of the house. I live 40 min. north of Forked River, NJ....if I ever go south it will be where the temps do not dip below 50 degrees. I heard the North Pole had temps warmer that those currently in NJ, lol!

    I've seen my share of wonderful old homes ruined by having exquisite woodworked painted over, original mantels torn out, wooden floors covered with tile or carpet, fireplaces torn out, the pitch of roof changed, and old windows replaced with modern junk. You ought to be ashamed to put yourself in that group! I will say that the person who buys this house had better have a LOT of money put back to take care of the ongoing HVAC expenses and the inevitable upkeep to the structure. That's why this kind of house is only for the rich these days! Besides, exactly what do you need with 16 rooms, no matter how beautiful they are?

      Here we go - defending myself about something that's never going to happen !
      Not one fireplace would be removed - not an ounce of carpet would replace wood floors ( or tiles for that matter ).
      I don't NEED 16 rooms - sheesh - this is a series I do on architectural homes - it's playfully called " I WANNA live there " - I'm not seriously considering moving from Montreal, Canada to New Jersey, U.S.A..............
      And brace yourself.............
      I feel no shame whatsoever about painting wood.
      Absolutely none LOL

      Well Joy - I happen to agree with you on that one................I LOVE the house - just not the dark panelling on the walls - I wouldn't gut it - remove all the beautiful features and start from scratch !
      Just paint the panelling on the walls - sorry ...........
      And this is kind of a ridiculous conversation at this point LMHO !!!
