Duck Duck..............Moose ?

I was out shopping for some yoga wear last weekend ( yoga wear = anything that doesn't have paint splatters all over it ).when I came across this - with a sale ticket on it

And I was drawn to it so it ended up in my cart.
It's one of those items ( of which I have far too many ) that you just know you can do something with but have no idea what yet.

John says - Did you get your yoga wear?
Suzan says Yup !
John says - What's in the other bag?
Suzan says - It's all yoga wear
John says - No - there's something pointy sticking out
Suzan says ( furious at myself for not hiding it better ) oh that - it's just a little decor for Christmas
John says - Let's see it

I took it out of the bag and

John says - WHAT the hell is that?  ( with a bit of disgust on his face )
Suzan says - Just something that intrigued me
John says - It's not even wood - it's resin - and it's ugly as sin
Suzan says - IT'S NOT UGLY !!!
John says - What's it for?

I tried frantically to think of what it's for.....................and came up with this

Suzan says - It's a serving tray - you just put your dish (es) on top of it and use the deer's head as a handle.
Suzan says - You know for hors d'oeuvres.
John says - It makes no sense

John roars and says - Well that looks ridiculous

Ok so this is my question to all of you guys - can I drill holes through resin?
I have an idea for this and don't want to destroy it trying to do it.
Until I know for sure - it's going to be a backdrop for my wreath
I won't even bother repeating what John said about that look...................some things just shouldn't be out there in public.

Have a great one !!!
Hugs

  1. It's very easy to drill through resin. Place a piece of painter tape over the place you want to drill a hole and drill away.

    1. Thanks for the info - I really wasn't sure and didn't want to shatter the thing to smithereens LOL !

  2. I take it that there is no hanger on the back side to hang on the wall?
Let's see, you could always mount a small mirror on the front; use to set a plant on, use as cheese and cracker tray, or I like what you done here, used as your wreath holder.
Yes, you can drill resin providing you pre-drill a guidance hole (preferably either very slow or by hand), you should be fine.
Small holes in resin seem to prove no problem I have found with a wood bit, I think using a masonry bit would prove problematic.
With no real basis for this other than experience in using drills on different things...drill a guide hole, then use a good wood bit to make the larger hole (wonders, would a metal bit be better? Probably not)
I would also recommend using a hand brace rather than an electric drill, lets you have more control and sensitivity to what's happening.
I would practice on an old resin piece first but remember before doing any drilling in your item, make sure you know what it will be used for. Knowing you; I'm sure you will come up with something, and will be put to good use in one way shape or form

  3. So you have to hide things past...your hubby too. UM, on the drilling resin. Some are very brittle, if it has a good low thump--when you rap on it, it should be fairly dense.

Another secret---start with a very small drill---and then get progressively larger. I would then reinforce the inside, if it isn't not solid with some silcicone or quick dry caulk to stabilize the hole, or the expanding gorilla glue...as the weight of whatever you hang on it...will stress the resin. Good luck, I had an angel stone looking wall planter that I fought with for a long time as the original inset hanger broke and left a hole. I do think some epoxy boat repair got used on the back of that also...lol. Sandi

  4. Yes you can drill through it. But I'm afraid I'm with John, I'm not getting it... not sure what it is!

  5. Um, that's interesting Suzan. You know how much I love your work and think you're uber talented, right? Girl, I'm kinda on the same side of the fence as John on this one...but...I have great confidence you'll turn into some kind of fabulous! As far as drilling into resin, sorry, have no idea.

    1. What's wrong with you and John LMHO ???
      I think it's adorable - it needs to be painted and " antiqued " I think !

  7. I don't think you can drill through resin. I'm almost certain I asked John if he could once and said it would break. I'm giving this with not much sleep. I've been up until 11:30 12 every night with the Met playoffs. I to wait for them to get hear since 1986 and forgot how exhausting it is especially at 50. It's much different when you're 23, LOL

  8. Hi, Stuzan! I don't think you'd have to drill a hole in your new tray, just keep it the way you did by just hanging the wreath on the deer head. I like it like that, unless in person you think that the wire or whatever you used to hang the wreath on the deer head is too obvious. You could hide the wire by putting a Fall or Christmas decorative bow or ribbon on the wreath and have one of the loops in front of it. Or wire or glue a small bunch of tiny pinecones and/or acorns and moss---or just moss on the wire. There are so many kinds of mosses available, and do the same with ivy and berries, etc., for Christmas---just enough to hide the wire or string hanger, but not covering the deer head.
I like your ideas! Even as the server it is a great idea! Very versatile! You sound like me hiding purchases from my husband! You GO, Girl!!! That's my Lucy!
    My Best to you,

    1. Oh Laura - I know I've mentioned this story once before but every time I think of it I giggle my head off - one of my girlfriends used to hide everything she bought - and only shopped when her husband was at work - she came home one day with a huge bag and he was in the kitchen - she whipped the bag across the hallway into another room and said Hi to him - but he had seen the bag flying through the air - I don't know why - but just the visual cracks me up.
He asked her why the hell she was throwing bags around like that.

    2. Believe it or not this sounds familiar, Suzan! I've done it all! A good trick is to leave it in the trunk of the car or as they say in Britain, the BOOT of the car, and then sneak the booty in when no one is around! Once he took the car with the stuff still in the boot, because I'd forgotten to take the stuff out right away, and I sweated bullets hoping he wouldn't have occasion to open the boot while he was out! Of course he did and when he got home he said, you've got junk in the trunk! Boy, do I!! The stories I could tell you. I don't risk bringing stuff in when he's home. Anyway, it is VERY hard now that we're both retired, especially when I have a delivery. I always would get home first from work so there was no problem, but he retired before me, and it's been rough ever since!!!
      Aye, aye, aye, Ricky!

  9. Hm, I have no idea if you can or not. I like the wreath on it. Can't wait to see what you do with it. How's your weather?! We finally got some rain (big sigh of relief).

  10. HaHa! You guys crack me up! I like it with the wreath on it. I just bought a cows head and I'm going to hang a wreath on it for Christmas.

  12. It is creative and fun you got this girl. Terry says you can drill through resin just have to do it slowly. If the drill bit gets too hot it can crack the resin. He also said sometimes they put rock in the resin material to make it heavier weight so if you drill and cannot get through it might be due to rock in the resin. He said though you can do this!!! So I say go for it.

  13. You had me cracking up on the floor when you told John it was a tray. That was too much, and what if you had picked it up and the deer's head had snapped off? It is an interesting piece thought, I'm sure you will be able to work your magic.

  14. I like your idea, it being a wreath backdrop. Could you paint it? White would look more Christmas to me. I'd hang the wreath from the head, it would make it look purposeful?

  15. that is an interesting piece. In a good way. I love the wreath idea, and I think it has potential.

  16. I've got no answer on drilling through resin but I'm sure you've got something fabulous planned!

  17. I think it's pretty cool Suzan. You can easily drill through resin so no worries about that. I love the wreath, but I know you will come up with many great ideas for this!
