How NOT to paint a bedroom floor

Well the day finally arrived - I've been pushing this on the back burner for months and months now - and after seeing the amazing job Kammy's Korner did on hers I decided now was the time - the floors are a disaster and if we're actually going to make the move to the country ( still undecided ) I have to do something to them because they're really ridiculous looking.
When the previous owner had a new furnace installed - they cut out the center of the floor - and then installed new wood in the square patch in the middle - leaving the perimeter with rotting 100 year old floor boards.   Who does things like this?  The perimeter of the floor is the least amount of work!!!
What did they save, 100.00? We changed the floors in the entrance - the living room and the dining room - but the bedroom seemed too overwhelming at the time ( if you've installed new floors you know exactly what I'm talking about)

John goes off to pick up the paint today.
John calls me from Home Depot
I ask him to get FLOOR paint - paint that's typically used for painting cement - and balconies - the durable kind!
I ask him to make sure he tells the clerk these are for wood floors.
John says the paint comes in Gloss and Matte - I ask for the Gloss - John says
" You don't want a shine on a painted floor - trust me "
I'm tired of trusting John - and don't think I ever will again -

Ok - so I prepped the floor - moving furniture out - and the balance to the other side - figuring I would do half and half and started painting.
BUT BEFORE I STARTED - I asked John if he had mentioned that the floors are varnished and was it ok
to apply the paint directly on them
AND HE REPLIES YES
LET ME REPEAT THAT.
AND HE REPLIES YES

Ok - so it must be sort of like paint and primer in one, right?

After the second coat - I'm liking it so much better - EXCEPT it's too flat looking - I should have insisted on the gloss!

There now - 1/3 done - I can go sit down and have a break
Soda - come sit here with Mommy - Soda?
Soda where are you?
SODA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Too late - the chief inspector has already been to inspect.

AND the first dried coat of paint has come up with her paws!

Suzan says - Are you sure you told them that the floors are varnished?
John says - Well you didn't mention that when I was on the phone with you
Suzan says - BUT I ASKED YOU BEFORE I STARTED PAINTING - AND YOU
SAID ' YES ' IT WAS OK!!!!!!!!!!!!!
John says - But you didn't mention that when I was on the phone with you
Suzan says - You know the floors are varnished John - why do I have to tell you that?
John says - Well - had you mentionned it

Never mind all the gun debate going on - I could actually SPIT bullets sometimes....................

Suzan says - I'm going to pick up a gallon of primer tomorrow - AND a gallon of gloss paint - because I can't trust you with these things -
John says - Why didn't you say you preferred Gloss?
