Suzanne takes you down to a place.....................

By the river...................

Leonard Cohen - Montreal's greatest artist in my humble opinion - when he wrote this song he was referring to the " Old Montreal " section of our city down near the Old Port.............complete with cobblestone streets - horse and buggies - heritage buildings - and of course the river ( the St. Lawrence River to be precise )

"Suzanne" was inspired by Cohen's platonic relationship with Suzanne Verdal, the then girlfriend of sculptor Armand Vaillancourt. Its lyrics describe the rituals that they enjoyed when they met: Suzanne would invite Cohen to visit her apartment by the harbour in Montreal, where she would serve him Constant Comment tea, and they would walk around Old Montreal past the church of Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours, where sailors were blessed before heading out to sea.[3]

I thought I'd show you a little of what he was writing about - so today I went for a walk in Old Montreal with my camera...................

Suzanne takes you down to a place near the river

Old Montreal, Leonard Cohen,

Suzanne, Montreal City Hall, old montreal

old montreal, leonard cohen, suzanne,

Old Montreal, Roof tops,

caleche, vieux montreal, leonard cohen, suzanne, cobble stone streets

you can hear the boats go by

Vieux Port Montreal, boats, bateaux, pier, old montreal, leonard cohen

You can spend the night beside her and you know that she's half crazy
But that's why you want to be there
And she feeds you tea and oranges that come all the way from China

Suzanne, leonard cohen, tea, oranges, old montreal, brass teapot,

And just when you mean to tell her that you have no love to give her
then she gets you on her wave length
and she lets the river answer

Old Montreal, St Lawrence River, Suzanne takes you down

st lawrence, river, old montreal, suzanne, leonard cohen,

That you've always been her lover...............................

and you want to travel with her
and you want to travel blind

Montreal, train, tracks

For you've touched her perfect body with your mind

And Jesus was a sailor when he walked upon the water
and he spent a long time watching from his lonely wooden tower

clock, tower, old, montreal, port,

And when he knew for certain only drowning men could see him, he said,
" all men will be sailors then until the sea shall free them "
But he himself was broken long before the sky would open
Forsaken, almost human
He sank beneath your wisdom like a stone

foot, bridge, old, montreal,

And you want to travel with him and you want to travel blind
and you think maybe you'll trust him for he's touched your perfect body with his mind...........

notre, dame, basilica, montreal, old,
source

Now Suzanne takes your hand and she leads you to the river

She is wearing rags and feathers from Salvation Army counters
and the sun pours down like honey
on Our Lady of the Harbour

montreal, leonard, cohen, montreal, our lady of the harbour,

(This is our Lady of the Harbour - who blessed the sailors before journeys)

leonard, cohen, suzanne,

and she shows you where to look among the garbage and the flowers

living, urn

french, windows, flowers, bloxes, floral, summer

old, montreal, jardins, nelson, resto, restaurant, bistro

There are heroes in the seaweed
There are children in the morning
They are leaning out for love and they will lean that way forever
while Suzanne holds the mirror.....................

And you want to travel with her
And you want to travel blind
And you know that you can trust her for she's touched your perfect body with her mind....................

Every time I stroll the streets of Old Montreal

And the Old Port

beautiful, waterfront, patina, dock,

For a brief moment, I see it through Leonard's eyes...................

You can click HERE for some interesting facts from Leonard himself on writing this song

And you can listen to an angel singing it ( if you'd like )

Have a great Thursday all!!!

I WANNA live there # 41

I live in a pretty incredible area - in Montreal, It's an historical neighbourhood loaded with tons and tons of charm - and 20th century architecture, just steps away from the city center, it's also a pretty expensive neighbourhood ( in which I live in servants quarters basically compared to what I'm surrounded by )
Because there are days I don't have furniture makeovers to show you - I've chosen Wednesdays to showcase and feature one or two homes that are for sale around here.................( or apartment - or duplex - or teepee )
Keep in mind this is in the heart of the city - so the prices reflect that  - think Manhattan - where these places would cost 3 or 4 times what they're listed for here!
On occasion I'll showcase beautiful homes in other areas - countries - continents - the one thing most of them will have have in common will be their age - because I love old homes with stories to tell, join me won't you?

We have pre-war homes. flats and apartments in Montreal (like Manhattan) meaning before World War II
But the South has Antebellum homes - which are also prewar - but the CIVIL WAR...........now that's a home filled with history.

Series within a series - I plan on doing a mini-series ( like North an South ) within the I WANNA live there series just for these homes - they're so spectacular they deserve to have their own!

Antebellum Homes
Antebellum architecture (sometimes spelled ante-bellum, meaning "pre-war", from the Latinante, "before", and bellum, "war") is the neoclassical architectural style characteristic of theSouthern United States, especially the Old South, from after the birth of the United States in theAmerican Revolution, to the start of the American Civil War.[1][unreliable source?] Antebellum architecture is especially characterized by neoclassical and Greek revival style plantationhouses and mansions

Part 1 -
This week we have this one in Washington, Georgia -
just an old sweet song keeps Georgia on my mind
well an old sweet song and this house

997,000
house size 5,500 square feet

What a gorgeous home but take a moment to check out the furniture!!!

I don't know where to rest my eyes with this house really

furniture?
doors?
windows?
rooms?
floors?
fireplaces?

The west side porch (excellent swinging porch) overlooks the steet side yard and an original ornate well house while the east side porch (excellent rocking chair porch as evident by the many rockers) overlooks an inviting 18 x 36 inground pool tucked privately in an area amid gardens, meandering walkways and lovely gazebo. There is also a charming GUEST HOUSE on the grounds along with several quaint barns and farm structures.

here's where I'll put you up when you come to visit
OMG I'm so in love with this listing

and lastly for your listening pleasure
the great Ray Charles and Willie Nelson
have a wonderful Wednesday
much love,
Suzan
