How NOT to paint a bedroom floor

Well the day finally arrived - I've been pushing this on the back burner for months and months now - and after seeing the amazing job Kammy's Korner did on hers I decided now was the time - the floors are a disaster and if we're actually going to make the move to the country ( still undecided ) I have to do something to them because they're really ridiculous looking.
When the previous owner had a new furnace installed - they cut out the center of the floor - and then installed new wood in the square patch in the middle - leaving the perimeter with rotting 100 year old floor boards.   Who does things like this?  The perimeter of the floor is the least amount of work!!!
What did they save, 100.00? We changed the floors in the entrance - the living room and the dining room - but the bedroom seemed too overwhelming at the time ( if you've installed new floors you know exactly what I'm talking about)

John goes off to pick up the paint today.
John calls me from Home Depot
I ask him to get FLOOR paint - paint that's typically used for painting cement - and balconies - the durable kind!
I ask him to make sure he tells the clerk these are for wood floors.
John says the paint comes in Gloss and Matte - I ask for the Gloss - John says
" You don't want a shine on a painted floor - trust me "
I'm tired of trusting John - and don't think I ever will again -

Ok - so I prepped the floor - moving furniture out - and the balance to the other side - figuring I would do half and half and started painting.
BUT BEFORE I STARTED - I asked John if he had mentioned that the floors are varnished and was it ok
to apply the paint directly on them

Ok - so it must be sort of like paint and primer in one, right?

after 1 coat

After the second coat - I'm liking it so much better - EXCEPT it's too flat looking - I should have insisted on the gloss!

There now - 1/3 done - I can go sit down and have a break
Soda - come sit here with Mommy - Soda?
Soda where are you?
Too late - the chief inspector has already been to inspect.

AND the first dried coat of paint has come up with her paws!

Suzan says - Are you sure you told them that the floors are varnished?
John says - Well you didn't mention that when I was on the phone with you
SAID ' YES ' IT WAS OK!!!!!!!!!!!!!
John says - But you didn't mention that when I was on the phone with you
Suzan says - You know the floors are varnished John - why do I have to tell you that?
John says - Well - had you mentionned it

Never mind all the gun debate going on - I could actually SPIT bullets sometimes....................

Suzan says - I'm going to pick up a gallon of primer tomorrow - AND a gallon of gloss paint - because I can't trust you with these things -
John says - Why didn't you say you preferred Gloss?

Hasta la vista Baby - I'll be back with more of this..................

Partying with!

  1. Listen, After I hide behind a bullet proof door could you spit a few of those bullets this way? I am living with his twin and their mother gave them both the SAME NAME! xo Diana

  2. I love the white on the floor and I'm sure it will look great when you are finished. I never send my husband to buy my paint. I learned that a long time ago. Funny how our visions are different than theirs, and I don't understand why he can't read my mind.

  4. Oh dear! I am thinking you will need one of the KILZ products to seal that floor. Otherwise you will have to sand the whole thing. I would ask someone that really knows their stuff and I would just do a small 12" x 12" section first to make sure. What a pain, eh?

  5. Oh I hate to tell you, but I was thinking you might have to sand as well. What a mess Suzan. I'd be spitting bullets too!! I hope you're done and I hope it's gorgeous!

  6. I have two words for you: Sherwin-Williams. Do you have their stores in Canada? Good advice, excellent paint.

  7. Oh, man...can I relate...not only the floor painting, and wrong turns during, but the cross-ups in husband communication. How do we get in these messes? Gotta love 'em...the floor will eventually come right.

    1. It seems to be fine 24 hours later!!!
Thanks so much for your visit - big hugs,

  8. Bahaha! The dog paws are hilarious! Not so hilarious that you have to repaint. But if it's any consolation: I painted my office, then decided I didn't like the color when it was on the wall, and then I repainted it. Seriously, nobody has time to repaint.

  9. I detest painting floors. All that furniture moving and the inevitable cat paw marks as they sneak by my and dance in the wet paint. I did my entire upstairs and sealed it with a no yellow lacquer. It yellowed! I'll have to sand all that lacquer off to repaint. Grrrr

  10. No, no, no, no, dahling. Never send a man to do a woman's job.

    Did you consider chalk paint?

P.s. I would leave the paw prints, they're too darn cute, lol!

    Nicole xx

  11. Ruh Ruh Rheorgie... sorry you have to re-do. I hope it turns out fabulous in the end...and all is well that ends well, yes? :)

  12. Oh Suzan... I feel for you. What a nightmare!!! Painting floors is a big job even when things don't go wrong. I've tackled this a few times in the past, and will again when we pull up some carpets sometime this summer. I have no doubt your floor will be a dream when you're finished, and I sooo hope you don't have to sand what you've already done.

  13. OH no.... I think you have to sand as well. I can't see any other way. Oh I soooo feel for you Suzan! This is not fun.

  14. EEEEKKKK!!! I read your post and wanted to go argue with my husband!!! He's done things like that so many times, I can't count...Poor you! Anxiously waiting for the next instalment!

  15. Just think about how beautiful they'll look once finished :)

  16. Better consult the painting department. I am not sure you can just paint over this with primer. Dianntha

  17. Our floors are in desperate need of redoing and I am considering paint- but not sure what hubby will think!

  18. Uh oh. I hope you are able to get good advice...and I think you'll probably have to sand, too. :(
Did Soda track the wet paint anywhere else? Poor you.
    Debbie :)

  19. Sorry, kiddo, but I think you might have to sand them too.......then use a primer like Kilz to bond it, THEN repaint it. Oh no! A move to the country sounds perfect right now. Are you taking John with you? lol

    1. 24 hours later Heather - ran my nails across it and they seem ok!
Going to seal it with 2 to 3 coats of Polyurethane ( water based so it doesn't yellow )

  20. Oh my!!! lol well they will look nice when you are done!

  21. Oh John, John, John. Shaking head here. Why must men be such... MEN! Sounds so typical!!

  22. Today I had to drive Brawns truck, he has mine. Some guy nearly pulled out in front of me crossing the highway so I flipped him off. A bit farther down the road I noticed my blinker was on to turn in that direction, and surly he thought I was turning and that's why he pulled out in front of me. Brawn will not understand why that is his fault, because his blinkers on his truck don't turn off automatically. AND I DIDN'T KNOW THAT.

  23. Hi Suzan!!!!

    Oh, Nnoo!!!

They'll look great at the end!!!! My son always asks why I go into detail
about things and I tell him because guys either don't listen or they think they know what's best.

    Craziness everywhere!!

    Have a great weekend!!

  24. Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh Suzan!!!! Well... it LOOKS good and It's GOING to be awesome... Here's a big virtual hug. And Darn those awesome animals we love so much. My cats walked across the went paint on my white striped curtains. Nooooooo! And remember, men only hear 10% of what you say. That's my own statistic. :) Can't wait to see it when it's done and I hope the "oh crap" moments of it are behind you!!

    1. Thanks Kammy LOL - I've got a lot of " oh crap's " happening right now!

  25. Ohh Suzan! I'm crossing my fingers for everything to turn out OK! Floors are a pain. The paw prints were a blast! :)

    1. It looks like it's ok after waiting 24 hours - I have no patience Cristina lol absolutely none!!!
      Have a good wknd

  26. Men have this thing about talking to sales clerks and asking advice, its like asking for directions I guess. And they can not be trusted alone you have to go with them or do it yourself. I sent my hubby to the store for stain for our deck and he came back and stained it with the green that you put on wood to pressure treat it. If my neighbour had not stopped me and helped me strip the deck I would have killed him. Who paints a cedar deck green ahhhhhh
I love the painted floors can't wait to see the finished product, what a great idea. hugs Tobey

  27. Oh no! Cat paws!

It's hard working with my sweetie on projects like this. I read directions...he does not. He speeds through EVERYTHING...I do not. We ALWAYS wind up repeating a step, buying something to correct a blunder, or doing something all over again. I cannot stand wasting time on a project.

I'm stopping by to say 'hi' from Katherine's Favorite Things Thursday - better late than never.

  28. Silly kitty :) Found your post on Thursday Favorite Things! I would love to have you share this on The Creative HomeAcre Hop today :)

  29. Oh no Suzan,,,

So what you are saying is if your floor is varnished, you need to prime first, lol..... GOOD to know.

I'm seriously itching to paint my floors, I don't like them AT ALL, but I think my hubby would have a cow if I did. I might have to just do it one week while he is gone, lol.

I really like the white floor much better, I can't wait to paint mine. Just have no idea when or even if I ever will get a chance to do it, "sigh".

Glad I stopped by though, now I def know how NOT to paint a floor, hehe, THANKS :)

Have a wonderful day, and stop by anytime to say hello if you can.
P.s. After coming back from an extended blogging break, I've started a 40 day challenge to get HEALTHY by my birthday. If you get a chance to check it out, I could sure use the support!

Can't wait to see it finished. Thanks so much for sharing your valuable painting a floor tips at A Bouquet of Talent!!! :)
