John Denver Anyone? ( Pallet Art )

A heart felt thanks to the following blogs for featuring this project!
Thanks to these fabulous blogs for featuring my pallet art -  It's more appreciated than you can know!

Life on Lakeshore Drive      Classy Clutter     Deborah Jean's Dandelion House
Cupcakes and Crinoline     One More Time     Clean and Scentsible
Clean and Scentsible ( the most viewed !!!)    Knick of Time    Green Willow Pond  ( the most viewed!!! )

john denver, annie's song, pallet, pallet art, easy pallet project

________________________________________________________________________________
Some of you may have noticed that I incorporate words of songs into my posts - a lot - too much? lol
I can't help it - for some reason it's how my brain works - it registers lyrics to almost every situation I find myself in - that and the fact that I have to have music playing when I'm doing anything at all.................

It looks like that headboard I so desperately wanted to buy - was not meant to be - one thing or another kept preventing us from picking it up - ( and then someone mentionned it probably had evil spirits attached to it and that's why it was alluding me - and that's all I needed to hear - seriously :)

So in searching around the house for something to actually make - or build - or paint - that I could POST about ( walking around from room to room - with one hand on my hip and the other on my chin - with my eyes darting all around )  I sadly could only find my pile of pallet wood - leaned up against my bedroom closet, and not one to pass up any opportunity - I seized the moment - dragged John off the bed and had him help me out a little.

Suzan says - John could you help me out with something in the kitchen
John says - Sure

Sorry - everyone - John was extremely agreeable to EVERYTHING I asked him tonight - not quite sure why yet - but it's makes for a boring post I know.

making pallet wood art, Annie's song,

I'm using 12 slats for this project - and 2 extra ones to secure it all together to make this
Does anyone else use their kitchen island as a saw horse?
First I dabbed some carpenter's glue onto each slat in a straight line

John Denver tribute, Annie's Song, Making Pallet Art, Stencils

then I placed the 2 extra slats length wise across it - and John hammered it all in for me

Pallet Art, Using stencils for art, Using Sharpies for stencilling,

There now we can just turn it around - and bring it to the dining room table - so I can work on my new canvas - I did a quick dry brush of Annie Sloan Pure White - leaving a lot of the wood showing - to keep
it very rustic looking

John Denver tribute, Annie's Song into Art,

and then this is where my love of words kicks in - seeing as it's Valentine's Day coming up soon - and I'm really not much of a Valentine's day kind of person (other than I want flowers and chocolate and a card because it's all about me on that particular holiday -  )
I thought a love song would be nice on this

My old faithful stencils came out ( both the dollar store ones and the ridiculously priced ones because I want to mix this baby up lol ) and my Sharpie ( hey Sharpie - I've certainly been promoting you a lot lately - maybe you could send me a pack of them??? ) and I went to town...................
I love John Denver - really really love him -

Annie's Song, John Denver Tribute, Pallet Art

Here Danni - I added a cupid in Pic Monkey just for you - stop bugging me about Valentine's Day projects now!!!

Oversized DIY Pallet Art, Sharpie Art, Stencilled art

I added a photo with a chair so you see just how large this really is

john denver tribute, annie's song tribute,

even when you think you have no food in the house - you can always make soup, right?

Oversized pallet art, John Denver Tribute Art, Annie's Song lyrics on art

hmmm - I may have to paint the ram's head next...................in the meantime wouldn't this make a great
headboard?

John Denver Tribute, Annie's Song artwork, pallet board art, Annie Sloan chalk paint for art

isn't pallet wood just the best for rustic anything?

DIY Pallet art, John Denver, Annie's Song, Annie Sloan Chalk Paint

Suzan says - Do you think you could pick me up some more pallets?
John says - Sure

What exactly going on around here?
Something's doing - I can just feel it..........................where's the dialogue?

Suzan says - Are you feeling ok?
John says - yeah, why?
Suzan says - Just wondering..........................
Suzan says - Thanks for the help tonight
John says - No problem

Ohhhh boy - there's something wrong
Trouble - we've got trouble
Right here in River City
With a capitol T
That rhymes with B..........................
that stands for BORING.

The John Denver Sanctuary - in Aspen - I would just love to walk around there on a sunny afternoon
( to fill up my senses )

Anne of Green Gables

The greatest Canadian that never lived.............................

For all Kindred Spirits

I can see it vividly as though I were still 8 years old - the wondrous joy of her world - I so wanted to live in her house - I wanted green gables but we however lived in an apartment in the heart of the city.
My father passed away when I was quite young - so kindly Mathew was someone I wanted ( needed? ) in my life - I had tons of uncles ( my mother came from a very large family ) but they were more the Archie Bunker type - I loved them, don't get me wrong - but I longed for a gentle kind hearted Mathew too. ( Marilla always scared me actually, lol ) I also btw would have settled for an Uncle " Bill " and a Mr French because I did have a Mrs Beasly doll after all.
I had an imagination the size of my little world - filled to capacity - and so I could relate to her.
I read those books - and I reread those books - and writing up this post tonight I realize I want to read them again - I want to get lost in the antics of a precocious young red haired girl from long long ago............

For those of you who loved these books as much as I did, a visit to P.E.I ( Prince Edward Island ) is
mandatory - walking around the grounds - walking through the reproduction old Green Gabled home -
you can just " feel " Anne's spirit all around you.

Here's my tribute to Anne ( with an E - because it sounds more distinguished Marilla )

I started with this

and ended up with this

I used the stencilling I bought this week to do my Parisienne Butcher Block  and I'm just loving the lettering on this -

And the flower is an Ikea wall art sticker set that I bought years ago - I placed the sticker where I wanted it
to go and outlined it with my Sharpie - then removed the sticker and and went over the design to " thicken"
the lines......................

I painted the 2 backplates on the top drawers black - to match the script - but not sure if I should have
went silver - not to late to change it - thoughts anyone?

I love the crispness of the black against the white - ( Annie Sloan pure White )

And really, from the bottom of my heart, I don't care if no one wants to buy it - this one can sit right where it is in my bedroom for as long as it needs to - I get all mushy and goosebumpy just looking at it .
Sorry John, I know it's girly - I'll make you a Hardy Boys something or other lol.

I hope mothers of little girls still read these books to their daughters -
I hope mothers of young girls leave them on their nightstands as soon as they're old enough to read them themselves -
I hope mothers of young daughters take the time to read them again themselves -
And I hope when their finished they forward them on to Grandma because everyone needs a little Anne from time to time.

Though she struggled with terrible bouts of depression for most of her life,  Ms. Montgomery still managed to create this incredible character that will delight girls forever.
Thank you Lucy Maud - for all that you gave with your amazing talent.

Transfer Schmansfer

Here's my first feeble attempt at transferring an image - and I say feeble because it took me far too long to do this - and keep in mind the lettering is stencilled - I ONLY TRANSFERRED THE LAUREL WREATH LOL - and it took me like forEVAH

The stencilled lettering is the same as the one on my butcher block island -

I'm really not sure how I feel about it - looks a little blah, right? Missing something-something?

Especially when you see this from Kristi

http://4theloveofwood.blogspot.ca/2012/01/articles-de-paris-french-dressing-chest.html
if you click on the above she gives a fantastic tutorial on transferring images on to furniture -
and makes it sound easy - so take a look at her dresser one last time - the details on that image are amazing

and then my itsy bitsy laurel wreath again

I need practice - and as much as I love doing what I do, I am not, alas, a very patient person - in fact I have very little patience period - I get an idea in my head and I want to get it there pronto - ( that's why I always take photos before my furniture is completely finished - always - I can't wait for the paint to dry ) and this process takes patience, believe me.

I can't think of a single thing I do leisurely really - I whip through the house cleaning - I prepare my meals quickly - I paint quickly - I even read an entire book in a ridiculously fast amount of time. When we go for walks - I don't know how to "stroll".  I've mastered multi tasking down to a complete art and don't even understand the concept of stopping to smell the roses.  I can't  "lay" in the bathtub and absorb that luxury - I jump in while the water is running and am basically ready to jump out once it's filled.  I'm wrapping a towel around me while bending down to get the Vim out to clean the tub.
And though I was always in a hurry - menopause seems to take all your vices and magnify them ( not your virtues unfortunately - they seem to diminish during this process ) so I'm like some sort of manic mama -
And really, aren't you supposed to slow down as you age?

For me?  I think I'm best to stick to free hand and stencilling for now, lol
Unless I can figure out a way to transfer the image with one hand - and wax or paint another piece with the other...............................

Both images are from the incredible  GRAPHICS FAIRY - where there are tons and tons of free transferable images................

Paint colors used ASCP - Paris Grey - and Pure White

XOXOXO
Suzan

Parisien Butcher Block

I don't have a before - but last night I tackled my kitchen island ( butcher block ) this is definitely going to be my new obsession - I found a stencil with exactly the type of lettering I was looking for...............

JOHN - what are your work shoes doing in the kitchen?

If I tell you how many times I trip over one pair or another of John's shoes - he has a terrible habit of leaving them laying around - usually directly in front of the doors - so that I have to bend down and pick them up
before opening it..................

I, on the other hand, am perfect - absolutely perfect :) and never leave paint - drop cloths - paint brushes - stencils etc laying around - NEVER, lol -

The salt and pepper shakers are from my first trip to Manhattan when I was 5 years old - talk about vintage lol, my mother bought them for my grandmother and I used to play with them all the time when I was little - ( that's the Empire State building on them btw ) I love them just as much today as I did then although I don't play with them anymore, lol.

And I don't learn - EVER - as soon as I finished the island I called John in....................here we go again folks........................

Suzan says - Do you like it?
John says - What the hell did you do?
Suzan says - I stencilled the island - to make it look like it comes from Paris - that's the address of a Parisien Butcher shop...................
John says - YOU WROTE ON THE TABLE?
Suzan says - well it's a stencil
John says - YOU WROTE ON THE TABLE?
Suzan says - you can't seriously tell me it doesn't look better?
John says -  I cannot believe this, YOU WROTE ON THE TABLE? You had me sand the bloody thing down to bare wood and then you wrote on the table?
John says - and what's with the little pile of fleurs de lys in the corner
Suzan says - they are stragically placed John to cover up stains you made on the table.............and their Parisien
John says - it looks strange - the whole thing looks strange - I mean people don't write on their tables
Suzan says - Are  you nuts?
John says - Are you?
Suzan says - ok - so forget it - you can sand it down tomorrow
John says - NO - I just sanded it last month - is this going to become a weekly thing?
Suzan says - no - I think I may keep it like this for at least 2 months......................
John says - Where's the stencil now?
Suzan says - WHY?
John says - I'm going to burn it - before you write something on the toilet...................

And after he went to bed - I did this....................................... ( you know me by now, right? ) I can't wait till he wakes up,
I.  JUST.  CAN'T.  WAIT.

XXX

p.s. can you imagine if it didn't come off, lol -
honey we need a new toilet..........................
p.s.s. it's really hard to stencil on a toilet - the paint just slides all over the porcelain!!!
It's messy - but it'll do the job - it'll keep me giggling for hours tomorrow.

I'm so devious really - I actually get excited thinking of ways to make him
crazy.
Victoria's secret doesn't work so much for me anymore at 53, but this?  Yeah this
will, this definitely will!  This will get his heart racing for sure, tee hee!

Before and After Desk and Bookshelf

I was sourcing a desk for a customer and found this one - it didn't work for her at all - but I grabbed it up an because I figured I could do something cute with it anyway - it's a well made typical SEARS desk -don't ask me why but doesn't this make you think of Sears?

I painted a chalkboard blotter on this piece for quick notes......................

but the coolest part of this is that it's like a smaller version of a bankers desk - because you can have it
facing the entrance way of a room................so I decided to put some of the stencilling there too -

If you notice in the first photo - they had glittery rope handles - I really did want to seal the holes up and drill just one center hole - BUT - it's too freaking hot to take out any kind of tool at all - so I picked up back plates from Home Depot - 1.99 each - and handles - all were in a coppery bronze color which was quickly changed with a few sweeps of Rustoleum Metallic Silver - and instead of one large handle - I put one in each hole - not sure if it works but it's staying!

and a close up

I actually use these back plates on a lot of furniture makeovers - especially if the furniture is plain because it gives it a little bit of character..............and my all important bling - they look beautiful with glass knobs too!

God it's so hot all my keys are sticking - very difficult post to type -

Than I bought this sorry little book shelf - actually it didn't look so bad on the listing but when John brought it home I was extremely disappointed - it was a piece that had obviously been connected to other pieces because there were holes all up and down the sides -
Anyways - here it is..............

I'd already started painting it - but you get the gist of it, right?

Holes everywhere - dowels sticking out that I absolutely could not get out ( John sawed them off and I sanded them )
It looks bad in the photos?  It was 10 times worse...................

I had to put wood trim on the top to hide the awfulness of the edges.................

And here it is with a lot of tlc -

Wait till you see the back - lol - just wait till you see this

Used Goo Gone to get rid of the paperwork - and then knew that just paint would not do for the back - I had to cover up all those lines of screws and holes - so again the wood trim came out -

I painted the back in Chalkboard Paint - and the wood trim white - so that even the back is now presentable
( I never paint the backs of antique furniture - because I feel I have to leave something to prove ( and honor ) it's authenticity - but this piece was a whole different ball game.

Paint colors are: French Linen - Pure White - and Provence for the stencilling - All ASCP.

Next piece?

John picked it up on friday - and here's a story to put my faith back into humanity - this is a set - it comes with a ladies dresser as well - and I had promised the lady who was selling them that I would pick up both pieces by friday - well friday came and we were only able to pick up the one piece - she lives far and it would have taken 2 trips and it's hot like hell - and .......................
So I regretfully sent her an email apologizing and explaining the situation - and told her she could place it back on Craigs list.
HER RESPONSE:
No, Suzanne - that dresser is yours - it belongs to you - so I will keep it until you are able to pick it up.
WOW.
I was almost moved to tears.......................
