Collecting Words................

Good morning everyone !

This post was not supposed to be about " words " but rather little touches I use to decorate my kitchen.

Except as I walked around it ready to snap some photos, I realized just how important :" words " obviously are in my world.

Not only do I surround myself with books - and write up a blog (almost daily) I decorate with them as well !

For instance I was going to show you how displaying a favorite cookbook on the counter can be dressed up with pretty measuring spoons - and then I realized it's the words on the book I love most of all -

I found this postcard on a trip to Paris many years ago ( maybe my first trip actually ) and found a frame to fit it perfectly -
Breakfast at Tiffany's would be perfect for any kitchen ................ I especially love that it's mostly black and white like my kitchen - but once again - I love the words
It reminds me of Paris - and New York - and one of my Favorite actresses from one of my favorite movies.
This sat in my dining room in my last place - but I much prefer it in the kitchen where I spend a lot of time

I frequently fill picture frames with " words " as well - I have a several in my living room - and in our last home I had a gallery wall of framed famous quotes................

Here's a small miniature one - with a simple message - that sits on the kitchen counter  ( the words get changed frequently in this frame )

Instead of throwing out old cutting boards - I repurpose them this way

In fact if anyone had of asked me ( before today's post ) if I had a recurring " theme " of decorating - I would have said definitely NOT because things are being changed up daily or weekly or at the very least monthly in my world................
But now I realize that isn't true at all
That no matter how I decorate

Or what style I'm currently in love with

Or which house I'm living in for that matter

I've always had a " theme " - a signature I suppose you'd call it if you wanted to be pretentious about the whole thing LOL

And that in fact, for me to love any space

I call home

I have to have my beloved words all around me in order for it to feel like
( Home Sweet Home - dollar store rub on decal - isn't the font great? )

Some people collect China
Some people collect Hearts ( to see an amazing collection click HERE )
I realize now - I collect words

“Words are, of course, the most powerful drug used by

mankind.”

― Rudyard Kipling

 I am shamelessly addicted.................................
AND this is only the kitchen - is it a sign of madness?  Probably

so I'll leave you with how this post was supposed to go -  pretty measuring spoons dressing up a cookbook

Have a wonderful day everyone !
I'll announce the winner tomorrow ( the book arrives today according to the tracking number )
Much love,

Good morning everyone !

I thought maybe this week we'd go back in time - back to simpler lifestyles - back to when a little sanity ruled the world

Back to a time when families sat together to watch good quality t.v. together - eating jiffy pop !

I LOVED the t.v. show My Three Sons - I still see the opening theme in my mind as I type this up............

So when I came across this article in HOUZZ - I was immediately intrigued.

Here's a house tour of the home Fred MacMurray lived in with his family in Healdsburg, California
The below excerpts come directly from the article itself - to read it in it entirety you can click HERE
Gallo Wines have since purchased the land.
I love the commentary as much as the house !!!

     Farmhouse Landscape

Article reads:

He bought the Sonoma County spread, now called MacMurray Estate Vineyards, in 1941 and remodeled the existing farmhouse in a charming period style that has endured for more than 70 years. Today the property is owned by the Gallo family and produces lush pinot noir, pinot gris and chardonnay wines, but the house remains much as it did when MacMurray rode the 1,500 acres on horseback and raised prize-winning black Angus cattle.

Today this barn holds photographs of the familieswho have touched the land — the Porters, the MacMurrays and the Gallos — but when Kate was growing up, it was used to store farm equipment and supplies. A good deal of the structure is dedicated to her father and mother.

MacMurray was no absentee landowner; he bought the farm with the intention of practicing diversified farming: He raised cattle, sheep and chickens, and had fruit orchards and gardens.

     Farmhouse Exterior

CHECK OUT THE FAUCET !!!  AND I'D LOVE TO HAVE THAT STOVE TODAY !!!  IN FACT
I'D BE THRILLED TO HAVE THIS KITCHEN AND WOULD MAKE VERY FEW CHANGES!
AUTHENTICITY NEVER GOES OUT OF STYLE

Farmhouse Kitchen

HIS DAUGHTER EXPLAINS :
Inside, the house looks much the same as it did when the MacMurrays lived here. “My parents were children of the Depression,” says Kate. “They bought things with the intention that they would last. There was no thought of redecorating for style reasons. In fact, we had many pieces that had belonged to the Porter family. They liked them; the pieces worked; and so they hung on to them. They simply did not have a throwaway mentality.”

Farmhouse Dining Room

Across from the kitchen is a breakfast nook, where Kate, her twin sister and their parents ate before starting the day’s chores. “I’m pretty sure we were the only children in Hollywood who shoveled manure and gathered eggs,” says Kate. “Now it’s popular to expose kids to fresh food and gardens, but our parents had the idea a long time ago. They wanted us to be close to nature and to know where our food came from.”

To the side of the table sits a cupboard that displays a portion of a family collection of dishes. The cupboard, like many things throughout the home, sports a crisp red hue. “Dad bought the ranch during the war, and there weren’t a lot of color choices,” says Kate. “However, Dad loved bright colors, and he really liked red — although the only red items he had in his wardrobe were a pair of socks and a sweater he wore on Christmas Day.”

                         Farmhouse Dining Room

The living room shows more of the simple country style the family favored. A rag rug covers the floor, and a red plaid sofa and chairs with wide wooden arms make for an unfussy place in which to relax. “The sofa — we called it a davenport when I was growing up — was made in the 1930s, but my parents had it re-covered,” says Kate. “My father was 6-foot-4, and he liked it because it was long. He would sack out on it sometimes.”

The MacMurray family added a grill and a table on a back porch off the kitchen. “Before the houses were built, the Porter family constructed a platform and a roof. They used the canvas from their covered wagon to drape the structure and make a tent,” says Kate. “That platform became this porch after the house was finished.”

     Farmhouse Spaces

“It’s my understanding that in the olden days, the women of the house would dry herbs here,” Kate says. “Today it’s another place for entertaining Gallo clients and guests.” Kate says her father considered it a perfect spot for gathering, because the landscape serves as a beautiful backdrop.

         Other

Do I WANNA live there?  Yes - I most definitely do - but more importantly - I WANNA live THEN  !!!

Again you can read the whole article from HOUZZ HERE
and did any of you notice he has a pipe in his hand - when I think of My Three Sons - I always picture him in a chair smoking a pipe - offering out words of wisdom - the role probably came very easy to him.............

Have a wonderful day everyone
( I really did attempt to sit down and reply to all your comments - but I have comment moderator on so they were coming in to my inbox twice after I hit publish - and then I got all confused and couldn't remember which ones I replied to - and didn't want to look like an idiot giving to different replies to one comment )
I'm so computer illiterate it's embarrassing - don't know how I even have the nerve to classify myself as a blogger at this point  )
So................I read them all - every single one of them - and they bring me more joy than you can imagine.
Thanks so much - you are all the best.

Now take a look at this - and try to keep the smile off your face !!!

FRAMED !!!

Good morning everyone !!!

While I was going through my stash of mirrors to put over the mantel - I found this frame I had forgotten about

and thought with a little work it would be perfect for the guest room

I gave it a quick coat of silver " wash " about half paint - half water  ( I wanted to keep some of this color so that it would look aged )

After hanging it up - it looked a little boring so I placed a narrow mirror I had in the center of it

And that's what I did last night when insomnia hit !

Have a wonderful day everyone - I intend to spend much of mine floating in the pool - it's hot hot hot here and I'm loving every second of it ( I am NOT ready for Fall in the least ! )

Evergreen.................a love post

Good morning everyone -

Hope everyone had a great weekend - I left you with quite a depressing post on Friday - feeling a little guilty about that today - really - who wants to come read about me crying?

Wouldn't you much rather read about John and I fighting?
No?
Ok - nix that - because we're really just a couple of lovebirds ( proof HERE )

Our latest episode started with my love of built ins.

source
Now let's start off showing you the ugliest part of this current house we're in
( well other then the downstairs bathroom - and the mud room - and the dining room and .................)

Isn't that just lovely?  Feel free to pin it for inspiration if you'd like ( I'm not watermarking it so go right ahead and claim it as your own - I'm okay with that :)

They were built to go around the heating coils.................heating built ins - awesome!
( as you can see we haven't lifted the last layer of linoleum off the floor yet - that'll be the last job and it's the one that's filling me with the most dread because I think the floor may have to be replaced )

Want a close up so you can DIY them for yourself?

Window screen stapled on to baseboards - BRILLIANT !!!
These people should have had their own show !

( I always feel a little bad when I show this house - because people did live here - and obviously did love it and I'm looking at something that was most likely done in the 60's or 70's - with 2014 eyeballs - but still -
really - this is just hideous )

Anyway I digress..................

While we were working on the plank wall - I rested one on top of it while helping John as he was installing the last piece and noticed it fit ( width wise ) on the heating " built ins "

Suzan says excitedly - OMG - I have an idea !
John says - CAN WE FINISH WHAT WE'RE WORKING ON FIRST, DO YOU THINK?
Suzan says - Just put that wood down for a sec - and listen to me!
John says - DO YOU WANT THIS WALL DONE OR NOT - I'M NOT STOPPING RIGHT NOW !

So I patiently waited until he finished the last plank and then pounced on him ( figuratively - but I should have done it literally - the day might have turned out differently )

Suzan says - I want to build built-ins over those heating thingamajigs
John walks out of the room
Suzan says - Wait - it's not that big a deal - we can just do it with these planks of wood ( which are currently on sale at Home Depot )
John says - ARE YOU CRAZY?  REALLY - ARE YOU COMPLETELY CRAZY?
Suzan says - No I'm not - it would look soooo pretty - and then while we were at it we could just redo what's currently there - so it would all look like a feature on the wall !
John walks out of the room
Suzan says - I promise you John - this is a really good idea - and it won't cost much at all
John yells - THERE'S A BLOODY WINDOW ON THAT WALL !!!!!!!!!!  AND we're talking about fence planks here - not proper wood !!!
Suzan says - Well that's the beauty of it all - it's cheap AND they'll be surrounding the window !

AND so we started....................
I really don't know why they look so narrow here - they're 5 inches - which is enough for a great deal of our books ( not the large ones but we have enough bookcases for those ones )  and cd's and  lots of decor -

John professed his love for me non stop while cutting up the wood.....................and how much he adores the ideas I come up with - he even hummed " Evergreen ".
( well that's how I translated his words anyway - a lot of them were illegible )

I hung up the mirror while he took a potty break.......................

John says - OK - it's too damn much - you're decorating this NOW?
Suzan says - No - but I want to build the shelves AROUND this - so there's always room for a mirror or artwork
John says -  I THOUGHT YOU WANTED STRAIGHT SHELVES????????????????
Suzan says - I DO want the shelves to be straight
John says - Don't be a smart a$$ - you know exactly what I mean -
Suzan says - But you need to know the plan  ( this was extremely hard for me to do on pic monkey - hope you guys appreciate it because it's all I have to show for now )

except I'll be painting them white - along with the new heater covers on the bottom
anyway we got as far as this

before I ran to get a couple of books ( to see how they fit - measure twice - build once type of thing )

and then all hell heaven broke loose - with him screaming how much he adored me - and worshipped me - really -  it got so loud I was worried the neighbors would hear him !!!
In fact he was so emotional about it all that he stormed gently walked out of the room ( for the final time ) telling me he couldn't be in the same room as me ( or he'd devour me - or something along those lines )

So my built ins are on hold - but this WILL continue !

I called out for him - and there was no reply - looked all over the house

Love, soft as an easy chair - this is the easy chair he used to get away from me  dream of me.
( have a good rest honey - we've got some work to do when you wake up )
But I sat there watching him - he looked dangerously close to tipping over at one point -and I'd pay
money to see that  so I could warn him before it happened -
You see?  Desperately in love - nothing we wouldn't do for each other!

Love, fresh as the morning air
One love, that is shared by two
I have found with you......................♫ ♪ ♫

Have a wonderful day everyone !
I'll announce the give away winner as soon as the book arrives - it's usually quicker than this !
So if you haven't signed up you probably still have a day or 2 for a chance to win - you can see it
HERE

P.S. I had to get his permission to post this pic............and he said do what you want i don't give a " of course sweetheart "
You see?
He can't say no to me!!!
I'm blessed !
Love is grand !
I don't care what people say about reno's driving couples apart - it seems to only be bringing us closer together !
Give me a wood plank - and I'll find something to do with it! ( other than bonk each other over the head with them lol )
Have a great one ♥

It's okay to cry.....................

By the time the Lord made mothers, he was into the sixth day working overtime. An Angel appeared and said "Why are you spending so much time on this one?"
And the Lord answered and said, "Have you read the spec sheet on her? She has to be completely washable, but not plastic; have 200 movable parts, all replaceable; run on black coffee and leftovers; have a lap that can hold three children at one time and that disappears when she stands up; have a kiss that can cure anything from a scrape knee to a broken heart; and have six pairs of hands."
The Angel was astounded at the requirements for this one. "Six pairs of hands! No Way!" said the Angel.
The Lord replied, Oh, it's not the hands that are the problem. It's the three pairs of eyes that mothers must have!"
"And that's on the standard model?" the Angel asked. The Lord nodded in agreement, "Yep, one pair of eyes are to see through the closed door as she asks her children what they are doing even though she already knows. Another pair in the back of her head, are to see what she needs to know even though no one thinks she can. And the third pair are here in the front of her head. They are for looking at an errant child and saying that she understands and loves him or her without even saying a single word."
The Angel tried to stop the Lord. "This is too much work for one day. Wait until tomorrow to finish."
"But I can't!" The Lord protested, "I am so close to finishing this creation that is so close to my own heart. She already heals herself when she is sick and can feed a family of six on a pound of hamburger and can get a nine year old to stand in the shower."
The Angel moved closer and touched the woman, "But you have made her so soft, Lord."
"She is soft," the Lord agreed, "but I have also made her tough. You have no idea what she can endure or accomplish."
"Will she be able to think?" Asked the angel.
The Lord replied, "Not only will she be able to think, she will be able to reason, and negotiate."
The Angel then noticed something and reached out and touched the woman's cheek. "Oops, it looks like you have a leak with this model. I told you that you were trying to put too much into this one."
"That's not a leak." the Lord objected. "That's a tear!"
"What's the tear for?" the Angel asked.
The Lord said, "The tear is her way of expressing her joy, her sorrow, her disappointment, her pain, her loneliness, her grief, and her pride."
The Angel was impressed. "You are a genius, Lord. You thought of everything for this one. You even created the tear!"
The Lord looked at the Angel and smiled and said, "I'm afraid you are wrong again, my friend. I created the woman, but she created the tear!"

Montreal image - taken near the Olympic Stadium by yours truly
It's all too much - what with everything that's going on in the world right now - between Gaza - and Syria and the Ukraine - and Iraq - and Africa - even Ferguson - not to mention I'm still hurting over Robin William's death ( is that normal ? oh well if it's not, then I'm not - because it really did affect me )  and now I'm unbearably heartbroken hearing about Jim Foley - and I mean unbearably as in sick to my stomach.
I get overwhelmed from time to time - and right now I'm feeling a little like I did when Sandy Hook happened ( that post is HERE - warning - I swore in that post )
Sometimes they need to flow.
And flow they do.
Some days it's an unbearable burden all of this worldwide heartache - so much so that it seems ludicrous to bombard you with John and I's silly conversations - or a plank wall - in the midst of all of it.
Today I'm a crybaby - tomorrow the laughter will return - hopefully - that's just the way I roll.
Erma said it's OKAY to cry - and she pretty much hit the nail on the head with everything she wrote - so I'm going to listen to her on this one.
I'm sorry to be such a downer - but some days are meant for tears and a little bit of silence.
This would be one of them for me.
Amen.................

Have a good Friday..............and a wonderful weekend
( I'll announce the winner of the below giveaway on Sunday )

AN ODE ...( and a hutch makeover )

THIS PIECE INSPIRED ME TO CREATE SOMETHING FOR A LITTLE GIRL
HAVE NO IDEA WHY - BUT AS YOU KNOW FURNITURE SPEAKS TO ME
AND MAN OH MAN THIS ONE NEVER STOPPED TALKING

AN ODE TO A NEW BORN GIRL

You will walk through forests - swim in oceans - and - hopefully
sleep in a desert at least once
You'll learn to feel one with nature

You will also wander through busy streets
and marvel at what can be created by men and women
You will be surrounded by love
but learn how to sit in solitude
to gaze at the stars

I will fill your world with enough calm
that when the chaos seeps in you will have a place to go
to remember that life is not always like that
That somewhere deep inside - peace realms supreme - you only have to look within.
I'll teach you to believe in magic - with fairies and rainbows - so that you never try to peer too closely
and dissect magical moments when you see them.  We all need a little of that - you are mine.

I will dry enough of your tears
to teach you how to dry your own
I will hold you close to my body when you need it
and gently - ever so gently push you away when you need that too

I will teach you to crawl
And walk
And run
And yes I will even do my best
to teach you to fly

I will fill your world with music
and show you how to dance with reckless abandon
So that you will still feel the rhythm in your heart
when your world goes silent from time to time
I will teach you to explore
to open doors - even when they appear to be locked

but I will also teach you that not all mysteries are meant to be solved
and not all doors are meant to be opened

I will teach you to surround yourself with flowers as often as possible
I will teach you how to accept them gratefully when presented as gifts
by lovingly accepting the dandelions you hand pick for me
but I'll also teach you  how to know when to buy them for yourself.
I hope you gift yourself often.
I will teach you to speak
so that you may express yourself with eloquence
And then I will teach you to read so that you know
the written word is just as important as the spoken one
I'll use real books - made out of paper and bindings so that
you learn to appreciate the smell - and the feel of the words
jumping off a page.
I will teach you how to draw that you may recognize art
and I'll hang them on the fridge so that you long to explore
art galleries when you can.

I will teach you how to sing so that you know from
an early age that it doesn't matter if you can't carry a tune
as long you hear music in your heart

I will teach you that although it's beautiful to find a soul mate - it's also important
to fill your soul with things that bring you joy and heartache -
A healthy soul is filled to the brim with both.
The heartache brings depth and teaches you compassion and empathy
The joy evens it out.  I will try to teach you how to keep the scales
balanced on that one - it's tricky - but it can be done.

I will teach you about second chances - and second glances
and not judging by the outside
I will show you how to recognize that most people and some things are worth saving
and how hard work and a dream and motivation can move mountains

I will teach you - that no matter what society says
beauty does NOT come from the outside -
Like an orange you have to peel away the skin to find real substance.
The outer part can be used for zest - great for decoration but in the end
it's only zest - and the part that gets discarded.
I will teach you how to peel oranges.

In a time when the Sun has become the enemy
I will teach you not to hate it too much
I will  teach you how to hold your face up to the sky
in sunshine AND when the heaven's open up .
Both can be harmful - both are essential  and filled with beauty.
I hope you learn moderaton by my teaching you to bring your umbrella with you accordingly
because I'll also teach you to forget it from time to time.

I will forgive you
over and over and over and over again
so that you know the art of forgiveness
and learn to forgive others - including me when mistakes are made
( and they will be made - over and over and over and over again )
I'll also teach you to say I'm Sorry by saying them myself when I
make those mistakes.

I will teach you that it's ok to cry by allowing you to see my tears
and allowing you to wipe them dry so that you always know you have healing powers.
and that a gentle hand given when needed can save a life.

I will teach you how to ask for help by asking for yours
I will ask when I don't really need it - so that as I get older
you will give it freely when I do need it from time to time.
I'll say " no " more often than you'll like
because it's important - it's really really important to learn
when to say that too.

I'll teach you how to laugh from the belly - because those are the
laughs that are most contagious - the sound of light tittering never
gets a room going.

I will teach you to love all creatures - great and small
by living amongst them
And that we are closest to our maker when we are kind to them.

I will feed you while teaching you
how to feed yourself
I will praise you while teaching you how to praise yourself
But mostly I'll just love you

while hoping it teaches you to love yourself....................
I'll probably tell you I love you at least once a day for the rest of my life.
You do not have to reciprocate on that one.

and if at the end I've done my job with any degree of success

you will know when to crawl
when to walk
when to run
when to fly
when to nurture
when to cry
when to embrace
when to heal
when to pull away
when to come back
when to apologize
when to forgive
when to dance in the rain
and most importantly when to stop at a little florist along the road
and buy yourself a bouquet of your favorite flowers............
just because you know you're worth it.

And that you will look upon this imperfect world as a privilege to be a part of.
As you've graced my life - so you will grace many many other's while walking upon it.
It's a glorious place made all the more so because of your entry.
I don't - can't know where your path will lead you - I can only pray that I'll have given you
the tools to make it a happy one.
You will spend the rest of your life learning - with every single day that passes you will
learn something new - and by 10 years old you will probably know more than your Mother.
And the magical part?
Well through all of this journey - this miraculous heart stopping wonderful journey - you will be
teaching me far more than I could ever presume to teach you - I know that.
Eventually you will too.

The day will come when you'll realize I'm not that smart - or clever - or pretty or talented and that my
chicken is always just a little too dry.
My super powers will fall by the way side - hopefully I'll have taught you not to gloat when that day arrives.

But first I'll teach you how to sleep through the night.
Your Mom

Have a wonderful Thursday everyone -
Go transform something !  Or write an ODE lol
