  2. All beautiful and whimsical. I personally would be happy in the Shire, along with the hobbits.

  3. My aunt and uncle used to live in one of the cottages in Blaiss Hamlets in Bristol, UK. When they moved in a lot of their furniture had to be dismantled to get it in and reassembled especially the beds as they couldn't get them up the stairs! But it was a lovely cottage, pretty gardens and they had lovely neighbours. I spent many happy hours at their cottage when I was young.

    1. Wow Diane - you're kidding me - so you've actually been inside one of these beauties !!!
Well my place is nothing like any of these but we had to cut our boxspring in half to get it up our stairs too LOL
You must have such incredible memories !

I want one in my back yard if nothing else to use and my very own craft place and my little 'get-away'

  8. The Hobbit House is no longer just a home. Check out how they are creating a townhouse community around it: http://www.kingedwardgreen.com/. There is one more in Vancouver and one in West Vancouver - all by the same designer and builder in the early 1940's.

    1. Thanks for the link Chris ! I know at one point the community was afraid that it would be demolished - so happy to see they've kept it !!!

  9. I'm ready to pack my bag and go with you. My favorite thing about them is the rock fireplaces...would love to have something like those fireplaces in the backyard.

  11. Yes, please! Any of them! If I didn't already have a building to turn into a studio, I'd want something like these.

  17. I love the character of all these homes. I don't think I would like to live in one, but I definitely prefer the uniqueness of these over the current "cookie cutter" houses of today.

  20. I have seen many of the Carmel houses up close and personal - okay not inside, but I have stalked nearly every single one of those houses. One of my comments on a walk along the streets was that it would be difficult to live there because of all the people looking inside the houses.

I took a picture of that last shop the last time we were in Carmel. The entire town is cute!!! Did you know that the houses don't have street numbers? They simply have names.

When you and John visit Carmel, I suggest L'Auberge and tell them it's your birthday. It was actually my birthday last year when we stayed there. There was champagne waiting for us in our darling attic room along with a birthday card signed by the staff. Every room has fabulous caramels and I had to buy extras. A limo was part of the service so we rode in style to a fabulous restaurant, but we walked back because we had eaten way too much.

The reason I told you all this is because once you are in Carmel, you need to keep driving south and visit our funky little beach town. The guest room is ready and I suggest January when it is miserably cold for you in Canada. January is generally a warm, sunny month. But, they are predicting an El Niño year as crazy at the 1997 one so maybe you should wait until February.

  21. I have wanted a thatched roof home for as long as I can remember. At one time, years ago, I contacted one of the few thatchers to check on having my roof thatched. It's still a dream of mine. I love the images you've shared…some I have seen and have on my Pinterest board. Love them all!
