I WANNA live there # 42

I live in a pretty incredible area - in Montreal, It's an historical neighbourhood loaded with tons and tons of charm - and 20th century architecture, just steps away from the city center, it's also a pretty expensive neighbourhood ( in which I live in servants quarters basically compared to what I'm surrounded by )
Because there are days I don't have furniture makeovers to show you - I've chosen Wednesdays to showcase and feature one or two homes that are for sale around here.................( or apartment - or duplex - or teepee )
Keep in mind this is in the heart of the city - so the prices reflect that  - think Manhattan - where these places would cost 3 or 4 times what they're listed for here!
On occasion I'll showcase beautiful homes in other areas - countries - continents - the one thing most of them will have have in common will be their age - because I love old homes with stories to tell, join me won't you?

Series within a series - I plan on doing a mini-series ( like North an South ) within the I WANNA live there series just for these homes - they're so spectacular they deserve to have their own!

Antebellum Homes
Antebellum architecture (sometimes spelled ante-bellum, meaning "pre-war", from the Latinante, "before", and bellum, "war") is the neoclassical architectural style characteristic of theSouthern United States, especially the Old South, from after the birth of the United States in theAmerican Revolution, to the start of the American Civil War.[1][unreliable source?] Antebellum architecture is especially characterized by neoclassical and Greek revival style plantationhouses and mansions

When I was just a little bitty baby my Mama would rock me in the cradle
In them old cotton fields back home

  1. Suzan, you couldn't touch those types of houses in California for anywhere near those prices, even in the recession. My little, old cottage would go for more than those mansions. Hard to believe. I do remember the Carol Burnett Gone with the Wind sketch. Wow, I miss those wonderful, old shows and don't even get me started on CCR..Happy Wednesday..Judy

  2. $299,000 thats impossible my house is valued at more than that. I wonder if they'd consider a straight swap. Why so cheap??

  3. Location--a lot of those big houses are out in the middle of nowhere, so getting cell service/repair folks/cable, etc. is a real pain in the you-know-what, if not impossible. What seems like a bargain, may not be.

  4. They are priced so cheaply often because of location (lack of jobs nearby), lack of amenities (in all those shots only one was a partial of a kitchen and no bathrooms were shown - not that they don't have them but they are usually pretty substandard) and these homes have huge upkeep issues. Termites and foundation issues are often a problem in the South. Heating and cooling these huge homes is expensive. Sometimes air conditioning is only provided by those deep porches and sleeping porches on the second floors. It is easy to imagine traipsing down a gorgeous staircase but those are priced the way they are for very good reasons.

  5. I do remember the Carol Burnett skit. The homes are gorgeous, very traditional southern feel to all of them. Makes me want to go grab lemonade and I don't even like lemonade!! :)

Happy I-want-to-live-there-Wednesday. Thanks for sharing the great homes.

  8. The economy in the U.S. is a mess. So I do believe it.

I'm in one of those states that was hit hardest, and one of the first to start to recover. I posted one the other day that a famous artist lived in.

They are bragging that the prices have gone up. But prices here dropped over 50+ percent, an over correction. So if they went up 20 percent in the last year and climb 5 percent for the next ten, big deal. If one bought not too far before the crash, one is in a not so good situation. (But if one bought after the bottom then it was good.)

So there are great buys out there. I recommend anyone interested study their target area and look at the flips, and the sale history of that property, so you know if the price is fair. Some investors buy something at foreclosure and turn around and do nothing to it and charge thousands more. I also recommend that one pays for their own inspections. One can buy a place that needs WORK and make out well, it just takes a little research.

  12. All I need is to learn how to make a dress out of curtains and I'm moving in one of those mansions! Is Mr. Butler included in the price?

  13. "This old thing? I just saw it in the window and I had to have it."

Give me a break, I LOVE Carol Burnett! That is my favorite skit of hers of all time.

Personally, I would like that family room with the wetbar and the all the finished wood. Gorgeous.

    Peace in Christ,
    Ceil

  15. Yes, hard to believe those prices. But I keep reading that a lot of Canadian real estate is over priced, so maybe ours will drop soon?
