I'm a little hesitant to publish this post - I don't know if I've gone overboard with Nancy from Nantucket !!!
I kind of love what I did - and I kind of don't .................
So opinions kindly needed !
Remember I mentionned that I wasn't finished with her yet?
Well I wanted to put a transfer on her - BUT IT DIDN'T WORK OUT THIS TIME !!!
I did everything I normally do - just like I did for this ( HERE )
and this one ( HERE )
But for some reason everything came off this time - my toner is low - could that be a reason for it I wonder?
So I sanded it all down - and redid the top in the same " beachy " finish with the full intention of just starting all over again ( it's gonna be rough - so rough - but we're gonna make it )
But then my mind drifted for a moment and that's all it takes - really - just a moment and I'm running in another direction completely ( you should have seen me playing baseball as a kid ) I really should be on meds - I'm like an A.D.D. furniture painter.
Beachy looking furniture makes me think of the ocean
The ocean brought this song to mind - and the rest is history................
Here's a tip thrown in for good measure - when stencilling words on a surface I always put some painters tape on lightly - to keep the lettering straight -
Do I need to distress the words?
Do I need to to eliminate the second sentence?
Do I need to eliminate the entire wording?
Do I need to get a life?
Whenever one door closes - I hope one more opens...........................and when you open the " door " of
the desk...................
Those are shadows in the left hand corner - and not my feeble attempt at drawing mountains................
Words worked on this one - and it sold relatively quick ( HERE )
So maybe it can work again,
Except
when I add words - obviously I add words that I love and that mean something to me and so................
I want to keep this one :)
Have a great day all
( I hope you dance )
Much love,
Sharing with !!!

I love your desk - it really turned out great. I am glad that you are going to keep it. You do such beautiful work Suzan.
ReplyDeleteMary
You want honesty, right? I am not a fan of the stenciled words. For me, they make me think of cargo and that desk is too pretty to be cargo. If the wording was a flowing script I might like it better.
ReplyDeleteWhy am I not surprised that you want to keep it ?! :) I like the sentences as they are and I like the wording idea. Hugs, Cristina
ReplyDeleteI love the words because they mean something to you Suzan. So, it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks of them because you should only have things in your home that you love and are meaningful, right? :) It is a beautiful piece and even if you decide to sell it someone else will love it, too! (Us women are into that kinda thing! ;) ) Hoping you have a fantastic week lovely lady (you truly are an inspiration!).
ReplyDeleteLisa
I LOVE that song, Suzan! Whenever I think about it, it ends up being stuck in my head for the rest of the day!
ReplyDeleteHey, if you want to keep it, go for it. It's beautiful!
I like it as is! I would look at it for a while before changing it. I almost never know how I feel about something immediately. I always have to live with stuff awhile. But... I love words/numbers on things so this would be a keeper for me.
ReplyDeleteI like it, I really love the ocean quote because I spend a lot of time at the ocean and it never ceases to amaze, but I also like Sherry's idea of living with it for a bit and see how you feel since you're a little unsure...You know John doesn't want to move it :)
ReplyDeleteI think it looks great. That song always brings tears to my eyes, I would sing it to my children. I love the little surprise when you open the door!!! A true artist always has an attachment to their creations but I am sure if someone came along, fell in love with it you would let it go knowing the purchaser shared your love of the piece. It would be placed in a loving home with years of appreciation to/for the artist that created it.

It's lovely! Keep it looking whichever way makes your heart sing. Personally, I'd get rid of the open door sentence and just keep the small standing beside the ocean line. I think the second line makes it look too jammed in. The rest looks amazing. You're amazing. Truly. xoxoxox
ReplyDeleteLOVE IT - LOVE IT - LOVE IT !!!
ReplyDeleteits beautiful, I like the slanted script better than the boxy writing, but thats just me, its a beautiful wording, and a lovely piece,
ReplyDeleteI like that quote (song) but it almost seems too much to me. Or maybe it's too dark. ? I agree with one commenter, if you're keeping it live with it for a while before changing it. Mind you I don't own any furniture with writing on it. :) I did like the piece plain before. An idea, since it's a desk, how about a postal mark address stencil? Something French? (What do I know!!) :-) Have a great day Suzan!
ReplyDeleteHi Suzan,
ReplyDeleteI like it. I think it gives more personality to the piece and I love the saying. I would live with it for a little while before changing if you decide to do that. I think too if the words were maybe cursive you might like it better. I love this piece words or no words.
Kris
Ok, Suzan......you've done it now. Made me positively drool. Over the dresser with the
ReplyDelete"Anne with an 'e' "! Please tell me you didn't free hand that? Please tell me how you did it? I promise not to tell a soul........
That desk will be perfect in your new home. No matter which one you live in.
Good morning, Suze! Here's my take on this subject- words/quotes are very meaningful and personal. I am a word girl...I like text on furniture. On anything for that matter!
ReplyDeleteIf you love it, keep it. If you don't, re-do it. Easy peasy.
One note...I don't put an additional coat of transfer medium or mod podge on top of the paper. Maybe that second coat causes too much effort to remove it and you get image loss?
Love you, fabulous woman. Do as you please!
In my humble opinion, I think you need to distress the words and take out the second sentence... for me, the subtle words and brevity of it provides more impact for a piece like this.. but whatever you go for Suzan, I think it will still look pretty. :-)
ReplyDeleteI agree with the distressing part Vel !!!
DeleteThink I'll try that before I go on to ( any ) next step lol
Thanks so much :)
XOXOX
Beautiful desk, Suzan. You did a great job as usually. Love the words.
ReplyDelete( soon I will knock on your door, bringing MY door.Lol)
Hugs from here
I love that this is a personal quote for you, I would say distress the words, but leave it as is....because you've go the rest of the song on the inside. Gotta keep it all together.
ReplyDeleteLove the sentiment of that song = and love the words inside the desk too! But I do think you need to distress them a bit, just so they look a bit more beachy.
ReplyDeleteAmazing job AGAIN!
Yes - I agree ( I think lol ) the words do need to be distressed!
DeleteThanks so much Heather
XOXO
So sweet and unique! XOX Love the color too!
ReplyDeleteLove the song and love the desk. Maybe fill the letters in? Maybe not. Also, if you keep it I'm pretty sure your husband will plotz. Better sell it. :)
ReplyDeleteHe has at least 3 conniptions weekly with me - if it's not this it'll be something else LMHO
DeleteThanks so much
XOXO
Hey Suzan,
ReplyDeleteYou are a woman of many words! Funny words, compassionate words and freedom of speech words! Therefore, it is most fitting that this lovely piece of furniture stays with its creator, in this case. If you love it the way it is, then case closed!
Happy Fall!

Hmmm...Suzan and words...I'm not picking up on any kind of connection. Suzan is a woman of so FEW words...I just don't understand what she's talking about when she says she's going to add words to something. I mean...she never says ANYTHING at all. Ever. Such a quiet, soft-spoken soul....Her husband probably can't get her to open up and talk about anything. What to do.... :P
ReplyDelete-andi
I so wish I could have this ~ it is perfection!! The song and the words were very special to me and Abby.

Suzan, I love it and I am a huge fan of that song! Live with it for a while and then decide.
ReplyDeleteCynthia

ReplyDeleteevil grin right back at you lol
Deletethanks Anj!!!

i like it suzan!
ReplyDeleteI like it, but it doesn't matter what I think. You like it, right? If you're not sure, live with it and time will tell.
ReplyDeleteFirst, I must assume this is the desk John didn't want you to bring in after you all worked so hard to get your house ready to sell. I have followed you for over a year and have seen your work get better and better - you are extremely talented. Only those in the business of resell truly know how much work you put into this piece. The desk is beautiful and I love the words. I find you not only inspirational for your work but as a person. I believe you have always "danced like no one was watching" long before it became a popular phrase. So my advice Suzan is to continue dancing and keep this piece as it is speaking to you. Maybe it is meant for your new home. Don't know the circumstances for your move but I sincerely hope it is a move UP. My thoughts are with you and keep on listening to the sounds of your own drum.
ReplyDeleteHey You!!!
DeleteYes it's the same desk!
This has to be one of the most touching comments ever - I had to walk away before replying to it - because you choked me up :)
Thanks so much - from the bottom of my heart - thanks so much
xoxoxoxo
Love the desk, inside and out! I vote for distressing the words....a little...
ReplyDeleteI really love the simplicity of the font...perfect. And now I am singing the song in my head :)
ReplyDeleteI'm kinda a graphics and letters type gal, so of course I like it.
ReplyDeleteI don't recall the song...but I do love the sentiment. :-)

Oh you should go to You Tube and listen to it Debbi - you'll be instantly hooked - it's called I Hope you Dance...............
DeleteXOXO
I really like this piece and I love the words of this song...it is one of my favorite!!
ReplyDeletehugs,
Cindy
Suzan I love that you've added words to this piece and I love the sentiment. But I'm kinda thinking a script text would be much softer and prettier. Like a dance...flowing with twists and turns...just say'n!
ReplyDeleteMarie@InteriorFrugalista
well there you go Marie lol - I never thought of it that way - it would be more indicative of dancing ( much like the video of the song, right? )
Deletewill keep that in mind - but I have a feeling I may be trying a graphic again - this could be the desk that never ends.......... LMHO
xxx
XOXO
Suzan, I love the sentiment on the desk. Maybe just a small bit of distressing, they are already open.
ReplyDeleteThe one with the Anne quote is fabulous. I read all of the Anne books as girl. You know, that was a long time ago.
xoGinger
You know I love this post. I love that you put words..and mostly songs on your stuff!
ReplyDeleteI love it Suzan. You did a fab job with the verse too. My Mom used to sing that to us and before it was put to music, she used to say it to us! I would keep it too. In fact I would be a furniture hoarder and keep it all. I am sure I could find a spot for everything, even if I had to crawl over it to get to bed.
ReplyDeleteI think this is pretty fantastic. I love that song.
ReplyDeleteI think the Anne of Green Gables chest is the one that got me hooked to your blog... or maybe it was a John/Suzan dialogue. I like writings a lot, but I agree that it's also very personal, so maybe not easy to sell. I want to use "Sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast" some day.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! you did a fantastic job!
ReplyDeleteI have yet to try this on furniture, I've just been so afraid to mess something up. I do have a big project in the works that will include handpainted lettering and designs, though....I just have to get to work on it!
ReplyDeleteWhat a special, unique piece! Your painter's tape tip is a great trick!
ReplyDeleteThat song was written by the brother of a friend of mine and I often put the lyrics on a card I gave each of my students on the last day of school. We had to discuss the metaphor because some thought I actually meant they should dance.
ReplyDeleteLove the song...love the words...but not the stenciled look on this particular piece.... I would either fill them all in and then distress or re-do with more flow-y (like that word?) text....
ReplyDeleteSuzie @ Dorothy Sue and Millie B's too
Hi Suzie - I'm going to blame it on the stress of selling our home LMHO - it's just sat there - I haven't done anything else to it at all - but I think I'm going to go an entirely different route ( and color ) with this one!
DeleteHugs,
Suzan
