BACKGAMMON.............anyone?

I love backgammon - so when John found this up the street in the garbagio (oh - he's come a long way baby)
I thought it looked like the perfect dimensions for my favourite game.

almost forgot the before picture ( again) it's a pretty typical end table - it had a handle on it for a "faux" drawer - which I removed and then filled the holes.

now I am lousy at math - really really lousy - ( except for problem solving ) when it comes to measuring and trying to figure out distances and how many and how far apart lines should be I am terrible - but I thought maybe I could figure this one out....................

1st step - this particular piece I primed even though I was using ASCP - I wanted more white coming through than wood.
2nd step - I started measuring

I made sure I had 2 inches at the bottom of each triangle - and then 2 inch spaces at the points
on top - except for the 2 end points ( they are 1 inch ) it's far from perfect - some of the points don't
match up on the player and opponents sides but they're close enough I think.
Once all of that was done - I started taping.................

The body of the board is done in ASCP Versailles - the pink triangles are Antoinette

Once they were dry - I removed the tape - and this is what this step looked like completed

next I taped the alternate triangles in ASCP cream

I am loving this - think I'm going to be on the lookout for more of these tables.................
A little bit of sanding and distressing and it became this

I stencilled the word Backgammon on the front ( in case people didn't realize what this is lol )
and painted the legs and sides with a mix of Versailles and Old White - 2 parts old white
and 1 part Versailles -and Voila - easy peasy ( I hate that term - but it was surprisingly easy )
NOTE: when you are trying to go a light color with ASCP - it usually takes 2 parts of white
to 1 part of the original color - 50/50 does not seem to make much of a difference.

wouldn't this look adorable in someone's country place - with 2 white wicker chairs?
and it's the perfect height for playing - far better than placing the board game on a
regular table where your arms are too " high"

it went from this - sitting in the garbage

to this in a relatively short time - another perfectly good piece of vintage furniture saved from
the landfill....................

hmmm, now I'm looking at this and thinking I need to apply some dark wax to this - but other
than that she's done :)))))

Backgammon, anyone?

XXX

UPDATE - just dirtied it up with some dark wax

now it's my vintage backgammon game - and it's all dirty and battered from thousands of games
being played beside the fireplace on cold winter nights.......................

  10. It's awesome! I especially like the color combination. I hope you don't mind, I'm going to post a link to your project at one of my blogs, Chess, Goddess and Everything. We write about lots of things there, including the history of ancient games -- backgammon is one, mentioned in old Chinese literature dating back to about 200 BCE. So cool that you play!
