Haddon Hall Dresser ( French Provincial Makeover )

Painted French Provincial Dresser

You have no idea what I went through to get these pics.................
Last week I casually mentioned to John that a lot of people take photographs of their pieces outside - and that I'd wished I could do that since our spaces are small and dark ( ish )

John says - Well why don't we do that then?
John says - It makes perfect sense
Suzan says - Oh - I never wanted to ask you because I figured you'd flip out
John says - Why do you always make me out to look that way?
John says - Just ask - I'll help you - no problem

Phew...................

So I scurried around yesterday to try to have it done before sundown

Painted Dresser

Trying to beat the clock so quickly that I didn't finish waxing the skirting or one side - it was now or never

Suzan says - John do you think you could help me bring the dresser outside to take photos?
John says WHAT ARE YOU?  CRAZY?
Suzan says - We talked about this last week - you said to just ask  you !
John says - Well I'm in the middle of a show
Suzan says - It's going to get too dark soon
John says - I'M FED UP OF THIS FURNITURE NONSENSE - NOW WE HAVE TO DRAG IT OUTSIDE AND THEN DRAG IT BACK IN???????
Suzan says - You said it made sense to do it !
John says - You always pick the worst moment possible !

But every moment is the worst moment possible - I can't win.

He wouldn't help me carry it to the back - so most of the pics have an ugly asphalt street behind them

John says - You're going to play with your monkey anyway
W.T.H. ???
It takes a moment before I realize he's talking about Pic Monkey

( the blanket is on the top of the dresser because I'm picturing this as a changing table for a nursery )

Suzan says - Do you think you could help me move it away from the street ?
John says - You're kidding me?  Just take your photos and lets get it back in already

But I insisted and he caved.

I ran around frantically while he stood there with his arms folded and tapping his foot..............
S.T.R.E.S.S.
Add that to the fact that I can't take a decent photo to save my life and there you have it - I won't be
" dancing with dressers outdoors " anytime soon.

My favorite part of this makeover is the knobs

French Provincial dresser knobs - painted

I just gave them a quick coat of a metallic paint that I had on hand (with a brush - usually I spray paint them) I love them - I want to do it to every knob and handle I have in the house LOL
Don't they look a little patina ( ish ) ?

I used Annie Sloan Chalk Paint ™ - Paris Grey & Old White................and clear wax
I did a teeny bit more distressing then I normally do

because she just looked like the perfect shabby canadidate

Annie Sloan Chalk Paint - Paris Grey & Old White

This piece is a Haddon Hall ..........which means it comes from the iconic Canadian EATON'S - a little research told me that they were produced in the mid 50's - and were part of their high end or " Prestigious" line  - a dresser like this would have went for approximately 395.00 in it's day.................big money when you consider that you could buy a house for under 10,000 - but 60 years later it's in incredible shape and will be around another 60 ( and longer ) without a doubt.

I'm pretty certain there's a before pic floating around somewhere in the archives - but I can't find it - and only remembered to take a photo of the last drawer before I painted it as well

Actually it was almost identical to these end tables I made over last year

Just in case you're interested - here's the makeover over of those pieces ( HERE ) these were keepers and are in my bedroom

And that's it - I'm thinking the rest of my furniture makeover photos will be taken indoors............

Except maybe for the next one up !

Which I can't wait to get started !

Have a wonderful Monday everyone
Hugs,
Me

A home for a Rocking Horse ( vintage rocking horse makeover )

Vintage Rocking Horse - Painted

There's a rocking horse who's on his own
by the downsatairs landing he sits all alone

He's chipped and nicked and feeling sad
Remembering all the fun he once had

He wonders why no one looks his way
He wonders why little boys never stay

It's hard for a rocking horse, you know
For try as they may, they just never grow

They end up in thrift stores and sometimes much worse
That's just the fate of the Rocking Horse curse

When all it would take from finish to start
Is to look very closely for the Rocking Horse heart

They all have one buried deep in their wood
And they'd show them to you if only they could

But if you look closely - sometimes late at night
You'll hear it - and see it - oh what a delight

And they dream of a time ( or that's what they say )
When a child hopped on them and galloped away

Galloping, rocking, and being held tight
By someone who loved them with all of their might

So next time you see one  ( and if he's alone )
Run as fast as you can, pick him up, take him home

Clean him and brush him even paint if you can
And present him with flourish to your own little man........................

Cuz when all's said and done & push comes to shove
They only need paint..............................
And a whole lot of love.

I used Annie Sloan Chalk Paint - Pure White and Graphite to customize the Grey ( roughly half & half )
and Emperor's Silk for the Red trim..................
My soon to be Grandson inspired the words
And even though his tail has not been stapled on yet...................we can say he's done, right
The " funnest " piece of furniture I've ever painted !
So much so that I'm on the lookout for another one as I post this :)

Have a wonderful day everyone !
Much love

Kitchen lights

John says - A couple of German helmets just arrived from Amazon.........................

Kitchen Island, Lighting, Black

John accidently shattered one of the ones we already had in the kitchen with a plank of wood

Suzan says - Well if you hadn't broken one of the Kitchen lights I wouldn't have had to order a different set !
John says - Couldn't you have just replaced the one I broke ?
Suzan says - Nope - I don't want to be changing them every 6 months................these are indestructible.
John says - That's why they wore them in wars.

This is what we had
But to be honest with you - being glass - and being in a small kitchen - they constantly had to be cleaned.

I feel like I have to keep letting everyone know that the word MANGE is EAT in French - not MANGE as in the disease LOL !!!
If any of you decide to visit Montreal - you'll think all the restaurants have a warning on their windows of an outbreak of MANGE LMHO !!!

Now I have to wait patiently for my Son to come and install the helmets

( War is hell on the home front too - and God only knows what a woman goes through..................)

And that song ?
When my Son was 6 years old he was obsessed with it - used to go to bed with a tape recorder listening to it - and if that's not aging myself I don't know what is !!!
THAT'S how we used to listen to personalized music LOL - long before the ipod was invented.

If anyone's interested, the lights were 39.99 each - so even if this whole vintage industrial thing is a trend - at least they don't cost an arm and a leg...................

What you can't see in the site's pictures is that they're " distressed " along the edges - revealing a little bronze color

that goes nicely with this newest project I'm working on !

Have a wonderful day all
Much love,
Me
