A FRIDAY CHAT ( about this & that )

Good morning everyone !

Come in - come in !

I want a new kettle.
This one in particular

Which I first saw over at BUTTERFLY & BUNGALOW  -

EXCEPT I LIVE IN CANADA - WHERE OUR DOLLAR NOT ONLY LOOKS LIKE MONOPOLY MONEY - IT ACTUALLY HAS THE SAME VALUE ( almost )

So while Americans can get to own this beauty for 129.95 with FREE SHIPPING ( still a lot of money for a kettle but worth the splurge ! ) we have to pay 199.99 PLUS SHIPPING.

I can't do it.
I just can't.
Every time I turned it on I'd want to vomit thinking how ripped off we are.
TRUE NORTH STRONG AND FREE ?
Oh Canada - we're the true north and ridiculously priced.

So I'm afraid I'll be boiling the water for your tea in my plain old kettle ( not that there's anything wrong with a plain old kettle )
________________________________________________________________________________

Which reminds me of other electronics.
In the last 6 months we've purchased :

A Pentax camera
A Bose sound system
A Tablet
A Laptop
A Desktop
A 49" T.V.
A new cell phone ( we won't even discuss what the phone is worth k? It's S.I.C.K.)

Anyway.............we could have installed a new bathroom for what we spent on all that crap necessary stuff.
I'm not joking - we really could have.

I'll just wait till a find a decent kettle for a little under a thousand bucks -
And then I'll buy it.
I seem to be most comfortable with that figure.
_________________________________________________________________________________

Now can someone explain to me why most of these devices are called " smart " something or others?
Because they make me feel extremely stupid.
_________________________________________________________________________________

I'm going to tell you the most embarrassing thing now..............
That new phone I got?
Well I didn't even realize that phones had advanced enough so that you don't have to actually text - you can just speak your text into the mike on the phone.

I FELT LIKE SUCH A GENIUS WHEN I FIGURED IT OUT !

The next time my daughter came over

Mom says - You're NOT going to believe this but I can just speak into my phone instead of actually texting AND I figured it out on my own - I'm like a genius
Daughter says - I almost can't bear to tell you this Einstein but phones have been like that for a long time now.
Daughter says - you have to keep up with the - OW - what the hell was that for? ( rubbing her head )
Mom says - SORRY BUT YOU DESERVED THAT - COULDN'T YOU JUST LET ME LIVE WITH THE ILLUSION ???
Daughter says - I don't know how you manage not understanding any of the devices you have !

How do I do manage ?
On a wing and a prayer ......that's how.
That's how I blog and that's how I live actually ..............it's worked till now.

Cripes !
or Crikey !
Have we made life complicated or what?
We used to buy a t.v. and plug it in and voila - you had moving pictures !
You could play with the antenna and pick up a couple of extra stations if you were really lucky or get cable and have a total of 5 or 6 stations !
You didn't even have to buy a phone - you just rented it from BELL !
Camera's?
Snap - bring to pharmacy - have them develop it and WOW - your captured moments !
I can't remember ever - not once - worrying that the shadows were too long or the colors too bright.
You ?
We were so much happier with so little weren't we?
_________________________________________________________________________________

We were really late on the bandwagon with high definition also.
As in we never had it until last week - when our Plasma died and we moved into the new era.
( we truly thought we were ahead of the times when we bought the plasma 14 years ago )
So my take on THAT is -
I'M NOT SURE I LIKE IT !
I have a brain that registers every single detail - no matter how tiny - and oh my God - I don't know how appealing it is to see a close up of someones zits - or scars ( do you know how many actors and actresses have scars on their chinny chin chins ? )
I EVEN NOTICED THAT ONE ACTRESS HAD A HAIR GROWING ON HERS........
Which depressed the hell out of me - because if their makeup artists can't see them to remove them then there's really no hope for me and my chin hair saga.

Suzan says - OMG - is that a pimple on his face?
John says - Shhh - I'm trying to hear what they're saying
Suzan says - OMG - look at the scar on her forehead !
John says - Shhh - I can't hear what they're saying
Suzan says - UGGGHHH - couldn't the makeup team have covered that zit - it looks like it's going to pop !
John says - CUT IT OUT FOR CRYING OUT LOUD !

But I couldn't help it - I was fascinated ( in a morbid way ) by all the flaws.
_________________________________________________________________________________

I also notice bloopers.
e.g. - we were watching an old episode of Mad Men and Sterling Cooper was drinking a White Russian ( YUCK ) he took a few sips and it went down accordingly and the next ( supposedly seamless ) frame the glass was full again.

Suzan screams - DID YOU SEE THAT ?
John says - what ?
Suzan says - A BLOOPER !!!  HIS GLASS WAS EMPTYING OUT AND IN THE NEXT SHOT IT WAS FULL AGAIN.
John says - Who cares?  What are you - the T.V. investigation squad?
Suzan says -  IT'S A MISTAKE - IT MESSES UP THE WHOLE SCENE FOR ME !
John says - You really need to talk to someone.................
John says - And why the hell are you screaming ?

Between bloopers and H.D. it's going to be very difficult for me to concentrate on a show.

It's March !
Hurray !
Here's what the forecast was for the first day

Blizzard Warning

Issued at 10:34 Tuesday 01 March 2016
Summary
Blizzard conditions with gusty winds and visibility frequently near zero in snow and blowing snow are expected or occurring. An intense low pressure system developing over the Central United States will graze Southern Quebec Wednesday and continue toward the Gaspe Peninsula. It will leave significant amounts of snow of these areas. The combination of strong northeasterly winds and cold temperatures with snow quickly accumulating will give blizzard conditions tonight. There may be a significant impact on rush hour traffic in urban areas. Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve. Blizzard warnings are issued when widespread reduced visibilities of 400 metres or less are expected for at least 4 hours. Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to tempsviolent.quebec@ec.gc.ca or tweet reports to #met

Aren't you glad you live wherever you do?
And if you live in the southern States or Australia or Greece - or anywhere where you're officially wearing flip flops ..............just keep quiet about it, ok ?

By the way - all that hype resulted in less then half an inch of snow so even the weather network are dummies - HAH !

My girlfriend's Mom used to sing this when we were kids - with the way I am with technology it should be my anthem really.

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend
Spring is right around the corner - but then again that all depends on what corner of the world you live in :)
Kisses & Hugs,
Me

  1. It stinks that no one ships it to Canada for that great price. We finally bought a tv too this past year. We had a plasma of that vintage. I can't believe how fast it was archaic. Of course I can't work the new one. I don't like how everyone looks wide. I don't deal with it at all. My spouse watches football and my daughter watches My Cat From Hell. That's it.

  2. Suzan, I never realized your money was as worthless as ours is, who knew? Heard the other day that, while they say there's no inflation, all the packages are being reduced so we're getting less for the same money. That way we won't know we're getting ripped off. Yay us. Have you seen the commercial where they grandkids come visit and the grandparents meet them at the door and hand them a pile of electronics to fix for them? Sounds like your kids better get busy as you're going to need more than Evan to fix all your new electronics for you.

  3. LOL I find bloopers all the time on tv... I can't help it. I still don't have a cell phone and when my husband's phone rings I have no idea how to answer it (and I like it that way). But, big question... you have a phone that you don't need to text, instead you talk into it? Isn't that what a phone is or was? Are people going back to actually talking on phones?

  4. Ditto to all of the above gripes!!! I can think of one to add to the list. "Reality TV!" That junk they call reality is about as real as the falsies someone I knew once wore to the community pool. Those things popped out and floated to the top. You didn't have to be very smart to figure that one out. I could go on and on about how our youth today are being fed a lot of ----, but I won't. BTW, you just reminded I need to get out the magnifiying mirror and tweezers. I think I felt a couple of stray ones on my chin yesterday!

  5. I love your posts..you are too funny.
We'll be moving back to the Buffalo NY area soon (from sunny NC) and I'm excited that I can finally use up the Canadian money I've held onto for the past 20 years. hahaha

  6. The tech world moves quickly doesn't it?! I told my son that whatever he studies at college should be something that he'll be able to use in 2-5 years not just now. With self-driving cars, digital printing, etc. Our world will change quickly! I still haven't used the talk and text function on my phone.
We had the same weather report the other week. People stayed home from work, schools closed and guess what? Nothing...unless you lived in Indiana...some people were stuck in their cars for 12 hours!
Did you ever read some of the weather peoples bios? They're communication majors and not always meteorologists. Another profession I told my son to consider studying. It's one of the few that you actually get paid a lot of money to be wrong. Or if you're not sure you can just say a 50% chance. I wonder how that would work for me? I wonder how long I'd have my job if I told my boss he had a 50% chance of me finishing my reports? I'm not going to try it but I am going to enjoy our upcoming 50 and 60 degree days ahead. Unless of course the weather people are wrong!

  7. LOL That reminds me of when I discovered that all I had to do was press the microphone (I used to think "why in the heck is there a corn cob on my phone??" :/ ) and speak into my phone and google would hear me. I told my husband "well, it's not the end of the world", then looked down at my phone I had been holding and saw a whole list of sites about the end of the world. I gotta tell ya I was freaked out till I discovered what I had actually done. lol
My son just bought a smart tv with the curved screen. I was watching Andy Griffith and almost didn't recognize anyone!!!

  10. OMG you did the exact same thing as me! I saw Su's sweet little SMEG and found out the price here in Mexico of the North and just about died!!! WTH?! So while on the 'Zon I found another cheaper not quite as cute alternative, for 50.49 + 19.06 S&H. (http://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00R88HCNU/ref=pe_386430_30332290_TE_3p_dp_1). I'll let you know if it's going to make my heart go flutter when I get it. There was no mention of all the taxes so maybe the customs folks are brewing a cuppa compliments of moi, still hasn't arrived. LMAO - I have to try that phone thing out. It's the stone age here in NS, didn't know I could do that. Tell your daughter she needs to run a class for us all, good god we are drifting on an ice flow... xo Patty

  11. Hi Suzan,
I've wanted a Smeg kettle for awhile. Just checked The Bay online $143.99 on sale. Mothers day is coming soon. Even sooner for England. Since you are married to one maybe you could convince the kids to chip in on it for you. LOL. If anyone can swing it you can! Happy Mothers day! :-) My daughter should be getting me tulips for it. She does the U.K. mothers day...since we lived there when she was 5-8 years old .She is almost 22 now and still loves march Mothers Day for me. So go for it! Lisa in Windsor Ontario

  15. Hi Suzan,
Funny you should mention technology, because I had just been looking through the Adult Ed catalogue for classes on computers for the hopelessly dumb! I got intimidated just reading the course description. I have my husband to help me, but he gets frustrated when I ask him the same questions over and over again. My problem is that I am from a simpler time, like way back when there still were no dinosaurs! So I understand everything you have discussed here. I like doin' what comes natural, and if God had meant for us to be so technical, He would have tightened all of my screws first!
I'm wearing cutoffs and flip-flops, but I don't like it---I'd trade you for having it be winter during wintertime, so please don't get mad at me for telling you what I'm wearing! They said it might rain this weekend, but they're probably just lying to us again.
Hope you get used to HD so John can watch TV in peace.
    Love ya,
    Ethel

  16. HI Suzanne....
    You make me laugh!
I also spot the bloopers...no one else does though!
I am wearing flip flops.....had to say!
    Enjoy your weekend...
    Cheers!

  17. So 'sick' means good (does it still?), but you put those .'s in there and made it s.i.c.k., so I guess you didn't mean 'good.' ;) That is a pretty kettle though. And I love the color of it too.

Hurrah for phones that let you talk into them. Saves me so much time. I think I might use it to comment on blogs when I'm on the treadmill, kill two birds with one stone and all that jazz. :)

  18. I want the same kettle... and here in France it costs about a teacher's monthly salary... So i've decided to print a picture of it and stick it to my kettle, much cheaper!

  19. I hate to tell you this but the flip flops are out. I resented having to paint my toes in February. Not to mention how dry and cracked my feet will be by October. I'd tell you about it but then you might start staring at people's feet while you are watching T.V.
Suzie: Did you see those callouses on her feet? Why don't those make up artists take care of that?
John: Cut it out for crying out loud.
    :)
    Thanks for chuckle, as always!
