Transfer Schmansfer

Here's my first feeble attempt at transferring an image - and I say feeble because it took me far too long to do this - and keep in mind the lettering is stencilled - I ONLY TRANSFERRED THE LAUREL WREATH LOL - and it took me like forEVAH

The stencilled lettering is the same as the one on my butcher block island -

I'm really not sure how I feel about it - looks a little blah, right? Missing something-something?

Especially when you see this from Kristi

http://4theloveofwood.blogspot.ca/2012/01/articles-de-paris-french-dressing-chest.html
if you click on the above she gives a fantastic tutorial on transferring images on to furniture -
and makes it sound easy - so take a look at her dresser one last time - the details on that image are amazing

and then my itsy bitsy laurel wreath again

I need practice - and as much as I love doing what I do, I am not, alas, a very patient person - in fact I have very little patience period - I get an idea in my head and I want to get it there pronto - ( that's why I always take photos before my furniture is completely finished - always - I can't wait for the paint to dry ) and this process takes patience, believe me.

I can't think of a single thing I do leisurely really - I whip through the house cleaning - I prepare my meals quickly - I paint quickly - I even read an entire book in a ridiculously fast amount of time. When we go for walks - I don't know how to "stroll".  I've mastered multi tasking down to a complete art and don't even understand the concept of stopping to smell the roses.  I can't  "lay" in the bathtub and absorb that luxury - I jump in while the water is running and am basically ready to jump out once it's filled.  I'm wrapping a towel around me while bending down to get the Vim out to clean the tub.
And though I was always in a hurry - menopause seems to take all your vices and magnify them ( not your virtues unfortunately - they seem to diminish during this process ) so I'm like some sort of manic mama -
And really, aren't you supposed to slow down as you age?

For me?  I think I'm best to stick to free hand and stencilling for now, lol
Unless I can figure out a way to transfer the image with one hand - and wax or paint another piece with the other...............................

Both images are from the incredible  GRAPHICS FAIRY - where there are tons and tons of free transferable images................

Paint colors used ASCP - Paris Grey - and Pure White

XOXOXO
Suzan

  1. I always thought I'd have so much more time on my hands as I got older, but it hasn't happened here, so far! I think I do more! I'm your newest follower!

  4. With every post I realize more and more how much we are alike. After raising 5 kids on my own I don't know how to relax either always doing a million things at once, and I have no patience either. My first stenciling didn't turn out the way I wanted either, just takes practise I guess. Yours looks great and remember Kristy has been doing this for a while. I think you are being to hard on yourself, it looks great. As for menopause it sucks big time. I am just one big sweaty mess, been 33 to 38 degrees here all week, and I have been the bitch from hell lol.

  5. You are so funny! I wish you'd come visit...I would teach you how to slow down. I'm a pro at it! Seriously, it's important to do that from time to time. A couple years ago my d-i-l had a business trip to Stanford, CT. My granddaughter and I went along but we spent each day in NYC. LOVED it! We would return to Stamford late afternoon to have dinner with d-i-l in the evenings. The weather was so pleasant that we would walk to dinner...d-i-l on a mission and I was behind, trying to absorb the beauty of the area, flowers, landmarks, etc. It was very difficult to slow her down "to smell the roses".

Your table looks great! Perhaps a glaze on it? That might make you feel better about it. I think you're too critical my friend ~ you are extremely talented!

  6. P.S. 106' here ~ you would slow down. LOL

  7. Personally, I think it looks great. :-) I must do something like that for England, and North Yorkshire specifically. Hmmm. For me it's not impatience, it's procrastination. lol So I'm wondering, are you an early riser? With your determination and speed, I bet you get a lot accomplished in a day.

  8. Oh- I did something very similar today,, SuzyQ! Yours looks a lot better than my own did. I used one of those paint pens to do the whole thing- I will post about it later in the week. I think you did a marvelous job- xo Diana

  12. This is a cute project! I want to do something similar, but I can't stop distressing things. :P THat's how I cover up my mistakes....make it look like it was on purpose!

  14. Great project, I semi-retired but still don't have enough time to get everything done.

  15. Transfer with Mod Podge takes time, Suzan. Time is that thing you keep running after, but can never catch. I have slowed down since I retired, but still must have numerous projects going at once. I had a heart attack at 47 - that stopped menopause in its tracks and made me realize that time is real, not just a concept.

Less seriously, I purchased some TAP - transfer artist paper. You are supposed to be able to iron images directly onto wood. I will let you know if this works!

    Take a chillax pill!

  16. You did a great job for the first time. I really like the simplicity of the black and white and as you see by the many complements others do as well. Like Tobey pointed out I have been doing this awhile and there were trials and many errors in the beginning. You have also reached out and utilized resources to achieve a one of a kind piece which many can't say they have done. We all have issues with our own work, even me, but plz take pride in what you can achieve. And try to find some extra patience for the next transfer, the more you have the more intrique you can make it. Keep up the great work!

  17. I've used a Sharpie marker with great success but it is time consuming. If you haven't seen the mod podge transfer method you should google it. It seems to give similar results with very minimal work! I still need to try it myself! Got to find the perfect piece first!

  18. I so can relate to you right now - hubs and I are stenciling a wall, a staircase wall - you know it goes up on an angle - not a good wall to choose for a stencil! I'm using every bit of patience, which I don't have much to get through this! I think it's pretty and like it. We look at our own work to critically! Thanks for sharing your creative inspiration with Sunday’s Best – you helped make the party a success! PS - I thought I was following? but now am through linky!

  35. Hi Suzan.
