We picked up a table and 4 chairs this weekend ( for a song ) to use outside - I also had a pair of cane chairs that I wanted to use outdoors. I started this project in January ( well the painting the fabric on one chair part ) and then tucked them into the mud room because there were so many other things that needed to be done - and it was winter
But it's summer now - and we needed some nice comfy chairs to plunk down in after trying to organize this backyard
I hadn't painted fabric since I helped Caroline from Piorra Maison paint this gorgeous piece ( HERE )
I was having a S.T.U.P:I.D day and forgot to take a before shot but here's the after
SHOCK ALERT - I did NOT use chalk paint on the body of the chair - I had a couple of tins of this pretty aqua spray paint - and because the sides are cane, it just seemed like the easy thing to do
I DID, however, paint the cushions with chalk paint - pure white ( this is after 1 coat - I have to do another
I think )
In case anyone wants to try painting fabric with chalk paint - it's best if you dampen the fabric prior and apply the paint on to the dampened fabric right away.
AND NEVER, BUT NEVER apply wax on anything that you're going to keep outside - the wax will melt
( unless you want to wax your thighs every time you sit in them in the sun :)
Next up !!!
Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend - the
The ducks made themselves scarce yesterday - nary a one and the ground hog must have been sleeping in
Heavenly peace because we didn't see it either :)
Oh Happy Day (s) are here again
Have a great Monday
Much love,

Absolutely gorgeous Suzan! I love the white with the blue. Perfect! Thanks for the not waxing tip...that could be painful. lol.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the motivation...I purchased a awesome $4.75 chair last week was hesitant on painting it but you have convinced me. HOpe your wild life becomes more tame...Sheryl...at Red Tin Inn
ReplyDeleteYour painted cushions look awesome! How does the fabric feel? I have an image of them being kinda hard. I know nothing of painting fabric other than how it feels when you "spill" paint accidently on it.
ReplyDeleteHi Suzan,
ReplyDeleteGorgeous chairs. Love the color. Glad the Ducks are gone that is where I plan on floating so I hope you get that pool up and running soon. Don't be surprised when you wake up and see me floating in that pool!!!!!
Kris
Do you need to apply a satin varnish over the paint and will you keep the painted furniture outside or on a covered porch? I so love this look but I am afraid the heat, sun, and humidity here would ruin them. Be prepared with mega-bucks for the pool start up. Good Luck!
ReplyDeleteSo cute! I love the colors! xoxo I knew about the wax, because its so hot here. :) I bought a piece for my porch that someone else painted, and I was fine with the color, but I had to clean it off and repaint it due to the wax. I let the wax float to the top and wipe everyday, until I could paint it.:)
ReplyDeleteAnother great project. Pretty colors for outside too. The tufting gets me every time.
ReplyDeletewell I never would have thought of painting inside furniture for outside!!! Wow, that is very clever, the chair looks great, love the color, you could always share the pool with the ducks, company when you swim!
ReplyDeleteI love those chairs! I could never have something like that in Florida with all the rain. They would be mildewed and the wood and caning would rot! Oh well, I can enjoy looking at yours. And...I love the color choice! Have a fabulous Monday...Vicky
ReplyDeleteThose chairs are gorgeous, Suzan. That's the blue that I use for my outdoor painting of things to stick around the yard and deck. lol And there's an awesome lime green too. I've never painted a wood chair with spray paint to put outside. Do you spray it with the clear shellac stuff after? I've also never painted fabric like that. It looks amazing! Nice dining set! I should look for a cheap table to paint. I need a new set and won't pay the price for glass that will be blown over and broken from the umbrella blowing in the wind we get here. Have fun and I can't wait to see your furniture, yard and pool all set up.
ReplyDeleteThe chairs are beautiful. Love that gorgeous blue!
ReplyDeleteThey look awesome! Can't wait to see table and chairs. :)

They look great...I know the groundhog and his wife will enjoy them.
ReplyDeleteToo much humidity and temperatures of hell to do that here, but I know you'll enjoy them!
Wow! Gorgeous colour! Thanks for the tip too. Maybe with all the paint can banging and door slamming they decide to move to a quieter spot. Patty/NS
ReplyDeleteSometimes I wonder how in the world you get time and energy to do all your great projects, Suzan. The chairs turned out so beautiful. I`m so exited because now I have found Annie Sloane chalc paint here not far from where I live, so now I`m going to try to paint fabric.
ReplyDeleteHugs from here
I am wondering as well if you shellac after paint?
ReplyDeletePretty, I never thought about wax outside lol, next Summer I want to redo my cushions and table outside.
ReplyDeleteThose are really pretty! Hope you have a great week!
ReplyDeleteThose chairs are really pretty! That is one of my favourite colours.
ReplyDeleteThe chairs turned out really pretty. The mug filled with a drink has got me headed to my Keurig (no kidding).
ReplyDeleteThe tip on the wax is a great one too!
They look lovely. I thought that painted fabric had to have wax to soften it? I haven't tried painting fabric - yet! Anyhow, they look amazing!
ReplyDeleteIs painted fabric durable. Will it be soft? Which chalk paint do you use?
ReplyDeleteThe only chalk paint I use is Annie Sloan's - it's durable - and will soften up after use ( a week or 2 )
DeletePerhaps your farming days are over!! I love your chairs and can hardly wait to see your table set in it's place!! I'll bring a salad!
ReplyDeleteSo lovely Suzan! You've inspired me to break out a can of spray paint and spruce up a few things.
ReplyDeleteSo I've got a vision of someone sitting on a waxed chair in shorts and leaving behind a strip of leg hair.
ReplyDeleteWow, would have never thought to use chalk paint on fabric! Learn something new everyday. Thank you for sharing! I'm off to paint some chairs... :)
ReplyDeleteI am soooooooo jealous. I've been searching for what seems like forever for chairs like that!! Great job.
ReplyDeleteI keep seeing the painted fabric chairs featured all over blogland...now I am itching to try it! I love the aqua color...what a pop! Enjoy them...I wonder though, with all of your makeovers and renovations, do you ever sit down? ;)
ReplyDeleteHi Suzan...I need you to come live with me for a week and give me vision for my patio and living room! You are so talented. Thanks for sharing on the Thursday Blog Hop!
ReplyDeleteThe chair looks beautiful, Suzan, love the colours!
ReplyDeleteDebbie :)
Love that shade of blue.. so pretty! I'm featuring your chairs in my Friday Feature tomorrow... thanks for linking up.
ReplyDeleteSo neat! Love the blue on those cane chairs! One questions 1. Is the top of the table wood or formica? Have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteFabulous Suzan!
ReplyDeleteI love the color of your chairs!!! I read somewhere you are supposed to use chalk paint for things outside....please let us know how it works out for you.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing you creativity with us at Project Insire{d}!
Love the color on those chairs, Suzan! I have been looking for a project chair to try painting fabric, but haven't found anything yet. The beautiful tufted backs on these make want to try harder to find something! XO
ReplyDeleteHi Suzan. Your chairs look great and thanks for the tip about wax on outside chair cushions. I'm looking forward to seeing it all done, as I've been thinking along those same lines..Happy Weekend..Judy
ReplyDeleteI love it! Do you leave the painted pieces outside in the weather? Won't they rot?
ReplyDeleteThey're in a protected place - haven't got wet yet and we've had a couple of humdinger rain storms !!! Thanks so much
DeleteXOX
This is gorgeous, Suzan! Thank you bunches for linking up and partying with us! Pinning this!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Kristi - I'm honored ♥
