Good - thank God - it's Friday everyone !
I've been plugging away at the reading room for I don't know how long now - and it's still not finished - I still have all the finishing touches to do - but here's where I am with the mantel
hmmmmmmmmm...............I spy painter's tape on the right hand side - if I didn't blog and take photos that may have stayed there until we move LOL
the plan is to install an electric insert - but for now I happened to have a piece of plywood that almost fit perfectly.- we just need to frame it out with a little molding to fill in the gaps
I painted it using the same paint I used as the base under the paisley pattern on the floor
Than I placed a mirror against the dark background - it's one of those mirrors that's boxed in with a mirror frame as well- so it's 3 dimensional and looks like it has a depth ( from a distance anyway )
I'll be installing ( probably marble tiles from Home Depot ) some type of hearth underneath it - which is why the painted floor stops abruptly - I don't want to paint one inch more than I have to of that paisley design lol.
Suzan says - I need you to cut out some molding to frame the plywood in the reading room
John says - In the what room?
Suzan says - The reading room
John says - Why are you calling it a reading room? It's a den
Suzan says - It's a reading room - I've always wanted one - so that's what it is
John says - Where do you think you're living - a town house in London?
Not quite - ( do only houses in London have reading rooms? )
Oh well - so does this ramshackle house of mine now too !
This is the seller's photo - they had an insert in it too
But I thought wood against the plank wall was going to be too much of a mish mash of rustic.............
You all have a wonderful weekend
Big hugs,
Me

ReplyDeleteIt's beautiful, Suzan just beautiful, you enjoy your reading room, den sounds like a cave who wants to be in a den. By the way we never use the word den here so I think it's an odd word.
ReplyDeletebeautiful as always. you do have a knack. Poor John, he really must get a little looser and go with the flow or you're going to put him in an early grave.

Hi Suzan. I just wrote you a long, long story about how pretty the mantle is and how I love the fact that you call it a reading room and the wood paneling on the walls and the beautiful paisley floor, BUT the server shut me down and wouldn't work so I won't go into it all again. Just to say job well done..Happy Thursday..Judy and now will try to publish again!
ReplyDeleteSuzan, the mantle is so pretty painted white! What you did in the background with the pltboard and mirror was so clever. Can' wait to see the big reveal! Thanks for sharing with SYC.
ReplyDeletehugs,
Jann
Every room in your house should be a "reading room." A soft place to curl up and read a good book...as I said on my blog, every room should have ample bookshelves...whether it be for books, pictures or knick-knacks! But yes, there should be ONE room that is specifically referred to as a reading room...men don't get that ;)
ReplyDeleteHE calls it a t.v. room - and believes there should be a tv in every room LMHO
DeleteThanks for " getting " me !!!
xoxo
Love the mantel so much! I'm thinking about doing something very similar to this! Loving white mantels right now, I never had thought to place a mirror in there though!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
