I've been torn over this decision for the last month -
First I wanted a beachy white washed wood (vinyl click on ) - then I wanted ceramic - then I thought of installing a new wood floor -
And last night an idea was born - Black and White checker board - it'll tie in with the rest of the white theme house perfectly and it may just be the best idea I've come up with yet!
It will be the perfect balance in an all white and stainless kitchen - and even though black and white are stark colors - I think a checker board floor - on the diagonal - can add a lot of warmth ( and a bit of country charm ) to the space.
Soooo I'm going with a black and white checker board floor - which after looking at a slew of inspiration photos - I'm quite excited about.
What do you think?
I know that people either love it or hate it - I had it once before and LOVED it - and since I keep drawing a blank on anything else I'm going to go with it :)
We're just going to buy the stick on ones - so that if an idea suddenly develops it won't be such a horrible job to replace them - and for now I'll have a floor -
Picking them up today -

I love it!!
ReplyDeleteI love it and say go for it! They go with anything....:) excited to see the results!
ReplyDeleteBlessings, Vicky
I love it! I'm not a fan of tile in the kitchen though because I drop things quite frequently and it's cold on the feet... But I love a painted wood floor! Either way the B&W will look great I'm sure
ReplyDeleteI love the inspiration photos. I think it would be great for your kitchen. Can't wait to see the kitchen when it's done! Stay warm in this Polar Vortex. Thankfully we're on the outer edge of it so it's not so bad.
ReplyDeleteI just love it. I have been thinking of that in my kitchen too (when we are updating it).( Some year). Can`t wait to see it in your kitchen.
ReplyDeleteBig hug
LOVE the checkerboard idea!!

Awesome idea…. I was going to say keep us posted, but I have complete faith you will!! I love reading your posts.
ReplyDeleteOh yes!! I'm actually doing this myself I love it! Although without 5 kids trampling it every day I'm sure yours will look better :)
ReplyDeleteI have always been a fan of a black & white checkered floor. Classic, timeless, versatile.
ReplyDeleteI love the look as well, I think I have saved many of the same pics on pinterest with this look. I love the all white look as well and the black and white floor looks great with the look. Can't wait to see it down. hugs Tobey
ReplyDeleteI think it's perfect for your look. And if you had it before and loved it, then absolutely do it!
ReplyDeleteGo for it!
ReplyDeleteIs there a wood floor already? Is it so bad that it can't be painted and stenciled with this pattern and sealed?
ReplyDeleteI think I have been visiting your blog for close to a half hour. I loved reading about your remodeling ventures. I use to flip houses so really enjoyed your views. Thanks, I am a new follower.
ReplyDeleteLOVE it! As you've shown in your source photos, it works with so many types of decor. Brilliant, Suzan!
ReplyDeleteI had that floor for many years and it was my all time favourite. It's so classic that it can never go out of style works with any era of decor. Excellent choice!
ReplyDeleteSuzan,
ReplyDeleteI love it. I have to honest though not the small tiles. That is a bit much but I love the large checked tiles they will look awesome and are a very classic look that will never go out of style. It will look so great in your kitchen.
Kris
Love the checkered floor idea. Totally classic. The small tiles are a little too busy for me, but the larger look is awesome. I'd love to give an old wooden kitchen floor that painted checkered treatment rather than tiles though, but my old wood floor is down below many layers of floors. Maybe one day, if we win the lottery, this old 1930's kitchen will get a total overhaul. Oh a girl can dream. lol.
ReplyDeletewith your white cabinets and your kitchen window frame being black I think the checker board floor will look wonderful in your kitchen. Will be a very classy kitchen for sure
ReplyDeleteI think the checkerboard in the larger squares on the diagonal will be GREAT! One question I had as I was reading...is she going to paint it on, use ceramic tile or use peel & stick until she's 1000% sure?! lol I think you're a wise woman! Just a thought - just place them on the floor and see if you like it before you go through the effort of really adhering them to the floor.
ReplyDeleteI love the look of it with the big tiles. I think that if you want that you should go with y our gut. You haven't gone wrong with anything else you have chosen for this house so far and your old one. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteCynthia
I think it'll look great! When we were house shopping I looked at one that had a checkerboard floor in the kitchen and I loved it :)
ReplyDeleteSusan
yes go for it Suzan good idea !
ReplyDeleteAmazing inspiration! And on the plus side, you can do so many games with your floor when it's too cold outside, from a jumping only on the black squares to inventing your very own game of twister!
ReplyDeleteLove!
ReplyDeleteI've been considering do this to our kitchen floor, but I will just be repainting the existing tiles (which I painted a country blue and antique white several years ago) in black and white. Love the look so much--you inspired me to start a Pinterest board! Thanks for the photos and the sources.
ReplyDeleteI love it too. Although I will admit that I probably don't have the b.....s to do it myself.
ReplyDeleteLove your inspiration photos, so I'm sure yours will look wonderful, too! We just started cleaning and getting the kitchen ready for painting and a new floor...I understand your excitement...I can't wait till it's completed! Looking forward to seeing your reveal.
ReplyDeleteDebbie :)
Love it....great idea! What color are your countertops going to be...did I miss that part? ;)
ReplyDeleteBrilliant! It will look fabulous. (......Patty, ......running off and stealing idea, teehee!). Patty/BC

Great idea! Especially with the blue, cottagy (sp) accents and the glass csbinet doors.
ReplyDeleteLove It!! A very classic look -you can't go wrong~
ReplyDeleteI love it! Perfect for your white kitchen and house theme!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE it! I've wanted a white and black checkerboard kitchen floor ever since we moved in our house - almost 17 years later i still love the idea so I think if we ever do a complete redo in our kitchen I should go for it. We put VCT vinyl squares over the old linoleum a few years ago and I considered going black and white then but I wasn't overly fond of the white vct tiles. Maybe I'll just paint the tiles we put down....
ReplyDeleteYou could also do a checker board paint pattern and really save some money- I did that in my small pantry, granted you're kitchen is much bigger then my space, but if you were looking to save some $
ReplyDeleteGreat idea, and I love it. :-) I have always wanted to have a white and black kitchen. Someday I will! :-)
ReplyDeleteI had them in my old house and I loved them! I will be painting my wood floors soon and I'm thinking about painting a black and white checkerboard pattern. It is such a classic look I don't think you can go wrong with it.
ReplyDeletePeace,
Debbie @ Flower Child Designs
Suzan, We had black and white tiles in the bath of a former home. Set on the diagonal really makes the space look larger too.
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Sherry
Hi Suzan!!!
ReplyDeleteI love the idea!!! It's fresh and dynamic at the same time!!!
Can't wait to see it!!!

I think it's a perfect solution! I'm getting the black and white checkerboard in my kitchen. I still have oak cabinets and this floor actually makes my cabinets look better?? Anyway, I love this look, it'll definitely look fantastic in your kitchen. I'm loving all of your updates. You're one brave woman. You're new home is looking so beautiful!
ReplyDeleteLove LOve LOVE!
ReplyDeleteThis is what I have been planning on for a long time. I'm going to paint mine though. I think I would love them all scratched up. I'm glad you are going to do it. It will be amazing. - since I'm reading backwards I'm wondering if you found what you were looking for or decided to go with the grey wood look, which by the way I think would be gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteI'm having so much fun following your decisions. I love the black and white look and can't wait to see it installed. In fact I just did a post on cottage kitchens and included a similar floor. Good luck it's going to be a beautiful kitchen!
ReplyDeleteLOVE IT!
